Heavy Truck Driver (CDL-A)

Candidate must be able to pass a thorough government background check including credit, criminal at both state and federal level, and must be able to pass a drug test prior to starting (and annually).

Responsibilities

• Regularly operates a tractor with semi-trailer or full trailer combination, couples and uncouples the tractor and trailer, and connects and disconnects the air brakes and electrical lines.
• The vehicles are equipped with air brakes and are driven locally and over long distance routes.
• Operator assures that cargo being delivered to other Government installations or ports of debarkation are properly distributed and secured, and that the vehicle is not loaded beyond capacity.
• Selects the safest, most direct, and legally allowed route to be followed, and identifies alternative routes to be used in emergency situations, should they arise.
• Maneuvers the vehicle within close tolerances when driving and backing over uneven ground and in narrow or congested areas, between buildings or other vehicles.
• Requires valid state DOT driver's license and CDL and must obtain a TYAD operating permit. HAZMAT training is required for any transporting of hazardous materials or waste. Training and licenses shall be at contractor expense.
• Operates numerous hand and foot controls in turning, maneuvering, and controlling large and heavy tractor trailers, buses, or other vehicles. While loading or unloading, may occasionally move or handle cargo over 50 pounds. Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents.
• Works outside while loading and unloading and during driver maintenance checks. Is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken.
• Operates tractor trailers throughout the Depot under limited traffic conditions and at low speeds in all weather conditions with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 90,000 pounds; operates electric, LPG or diesel powered Fort Lift Trucks with a GVW up 70,000 pounds; and capable of lifting loads weighing 40,000 pounds or more; and operates propane, electric, gasoline, or diesel powered specialized materials handling equipment (e.g., Turret Trucks, Swing Mast Lifts, Side Loaders, Articulating Boom Metal crushers, Four-Directional "reach forks").
• Operates tracked vehicles with stick and pedal steering with a GVW of up to 70,000 pounds.
• Receives scheduled shipments, reviews documentation, inspects equipment, material, and/or assets and processes receipts through the Logistics Management Program (LMP).
• Operates tractor-trailers under normal traffic conditions at low speeds in all weather conditions to transport supplies, materials, and equipment.
• May be required to operate off depot, over the road. Vehicles are driven on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules and standard routes.
• Transports and operates specialized articulating boom metal crusher throughout the depot to process aluminum, steel, sheet metal, cabinets and other recyclable materials.
• Operates tracked vehicles in all weather conditions to facilitate vehicle modification processes. Moves tracks through inter-shop processes and for road testing, staging, and shipment.
• Provides receiving functions necessary for receiving, inspecting, and inducting assets to mission shops.
• Ensures that cargo is properly distributed, secured and protected from the weather; performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, and cleaning and washing vehicles; and completes trip tickets and preventive maintenance records.
• Promptly reports missing, lost, found, or unattended equipment. Inventories and inspects equipment on a regular basis and reports worn or broken equipment.
• Ensures the equipment control log is properly signed off. Complies with safety rules and procedures.
• Performs work in a matter that enhances the safety of the work area.
• Observes all applicable DOD, OSHA, and local safety regulations.
• Maintains awareness of shop safety procedures and identifies any observed unsafe practices or procedures.
• Wears and maintains required personal safety equipment. Promptly reports accidents, injuries, safety violations, or unsafe practices or procedures to supervisor.
• Cleans tools and equipment, and ensures work area is returned to original condition upon completion of assignment. Performs daily operational, cleaning, and preventative maintenance services and immediately reports any discrepancies.
• At end of shift, assures all flammable materials are properly stored. Puts materials away in a timely manner when returned to the shop.

Qualifications

• Must be a US Citizen able to obtain and maintain a government Public Trust which includes in depth background, criminal and financial check at both local and federal level.

Physical requirements:

• Must be able to pass a Drug Test prior to being hired.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical and then pass an annual employment physical.

License:

• Must have a valid license and good driving record in order to drive government vehicles.
• Must have a CDL-A license.
• Must have minimum of 3 years' experience as a CDL A heavy truck driver.
• Be able to operate hand and foot controls which start, turn, and stop forklifts and tractors, or which raise, lower, or tilt the load on the forklift.
• Proven experience with multiple types of forklifts.
• Be able to obtain a Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) operating permit to be able to access and work on base.
• Be familiar with transporting HAZMAT.
• Be able to lift and move items weighing up to 45 pounds.
• Be computer literate and able to function with basic programs, research, data input, etc.
• Have physical endurance to withstand the strain from vibration.
