Job Description

Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs comprehensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy mobile equipment and vehicle systems, including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components. Diagnoses issues, conducts testing and inspections, and uses specialized tools to ensure equipment functionality and readiness. Supports rebuild operations, road testing, and final inspections, with potential requirements to operate vehicles (CDL) and equipment such as forklifts.

Responsibilities

  • Performs full range of maintenance processes including disassembly, repair, overhaul, modification, alignment, diagnosis, and testing in bay or line operations.
  • Services wheeled and tracked heavy mobile equipment, heavy-duty transport trailers, missile/electronic system components, and related equipment.
  • Disassembles equipment by removing engines, transmissions, final drives, and other assemblies/components.
  • Determines appropriate methods for disassembly and organizes parts for storage or reclamation based on condition.
  • Reconditions equipment by replacing or overhauling parts, components, and major assemblies
  • Installs, connects, and adjusts mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs modifications, repairs, and adjustments before and after installation on vehicles.
  • Conducts diagnostics, testing, and troubleshooting to determine serviceability and identify defects/malfunctions.
  • Prepares vehicles for final inspection through tune-ups, repairs, replacements, and adjustments.
  • Uses precision tools such as vacuum gauges, voltmeters, ohmmeters, micrometers, and other specialized equipment.
  • Assembles heavy-duty hydraulic systems and evaluates component serviceability.
  • Disassembles, inspects, repairs, reassembles components, and performs road tests.
  • Troubleshoots and presents completed vehicles for inspection.
  • Supports assembly line rebuild operations or works as part of a rebuild crew as needed.
  • May be required to obtain and use a CDL Class A to operate vehicles for testing purposes.
  • Will obtain a forklift license upon request.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Requires 1-5 years of training both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced. workers, a recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
  • Ability to Obtain and Maintain Government Secret Security Clearance.
