Job Description

Sr. Systems Engineer

HPS is seeking a Sr. Systems Engineer to support an ongoing federal contract in Washington, DC.
In this role, the Sr. Systems Engineer will provide senior-level expertise on enterprise systems architecture while managing, securing, and maintaining the systems infrastructure the customer depends on. The position combines architecture and standards governance with hands-on systems administration, including classified IT systems, Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory, enterprise servers and system appliances, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. The engineer will work closely with IT staff, Information Assurance, stakeholders, and development contractors to ensure high availability, security, and compliance. Remove the network reference to narrow down the focus to system support.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Systems Architecture & Engineering

• Provide senior-level expertise on decisions and priorities for the enterprise's overall systems architecture. Recommend removing this text to keep the focus for hands on work, could be interpreted as a management role.
• Design, implement, and maintain enterprise architectures that integrate multiple platforms, operating systems, and applications in secure NSS environments.
• Establish and implement standards and guidelines for technology solutions, and review, advise on, and design standard software and hardware builds, weighing risks, costs versus benefits, and business impact.
• Develop and document the framework for integrating and implementing changes to technical standards.
• Assist in developing and managing architecture governance processes, including engineering oversight and tracking compliance status.
• Assess application platforms for upgrades or replacement that meet the customer’s current mission requirements with the capability to scale the solution for potential growth.
Systems Administration & Infrastructure
• Manage and monitor installed systems and infrastructure to ensure the highest levels of availability, and support their optimization, integration, backup, recovery, and upgrading.
• Install, configure, test, harden, patch, and maintain servers, operating systems, applications, and enterprise security and systems management platforms throughout their lifecycle, in accordance with established schedules and best practices.
• Support and maintain enterprise application platforms that will include Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory and Microsoft Certification Authority.
• Manage enterprise-class hardware, servers, storage appliances, application load-balancers and application encryption appliances.
• Design and implement system integrations and automation across enterprise tools and platforms, ensuring reliability, scalability, and operational resiliency in production.
Operations Support
• Provide direct support for day-to-day operations of network hardware and operating systems, including evaluating system utilization, monitoring response time, and serving as primary support for detecting and correcting operational problems.
• Coordinate and/or perform additions and changes to operating systems and attached devices, including investigation, analysis, recommendation, configuration, installation, and testing.
• Lead advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of complex system, application, and integration issues, and design and implement corrective and preventive solutions.
• Assist with the documentation, deployment, and administration of redundant classified IT systems.
Security & Compliance
• Engineer and maintain standardized software and hardware baselines that comply with DISA STIGs, DIA/NSS security baselines, and approved architectural standards.
• Build and harden servers to standard build guidelines, and work with Information Assurance to remediate findings from IT security scans.
• Monitor systems for configuration drift, vulnerabilities, and security findings; engineer remediation strategies and coordinate implementation within mandated timelines.
• Identify, qualify, and apply system patches and updates, and perform security audits, reporting findings and taking corrective action.
• Apply systems engineering best practices and formal change-management processes to changes in infrastructure or configurations, and attend Authorized Outage, Firewall Change Request, and Root Cause Change Control Boards as required.
Documentation, Collaboration & Problem Solving
• Serve as a senior technical point of contact for assigned systems and initiatives, collaborating with project teams, ISSOs, ISSMs, and stakeholders to resolve technical and compliance challenges.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including requirements, implementation plans, system designs, configuration baselines, dependencies, SOPs, and diagrams.
• Analyze IT issues, evaluate alternatives, and make logical recommendations; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
• Provide technical guidance to customers on current system capabilities and recommend improvements where feasible.
