JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary
The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for designing and engineering complete system solutions that meet customer operational and technical requirements. This role serves as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) and works directly with customers, customer engineering teams, Sales Engineers and internal engineering teams to translate requirements into optimized, executable system architectures.
The Principal Systems Engineer provides advanced technical expertise in rack-level infrastructure design, air- based, liquid and evaporative cooling technologies, network integration and connectivity, system hardware specifications, power requirements, and facility considerations. The role evaluates complex customer requirements and develops system architectures that balance performance, scalability, reliability, maintainability, and environmental constraints.
This position is highly customer-facing and requires the ability to interpret technical requirements, Statements of Work (SOWs), and Bills of Material (BOMs); develop architecture drawings and technical enclosure designs; evaluate alternatives; and present multiple Courses of Action (COAs) and recommendations to customers and internal stakeholders.
The Principal Systems Engineer also supports proposal development, technical reviews, and customer engagements by providing the technical expertise necessary to develop solutions that are practical, optimized, and aligned with customer requirements.
Essential functions
• Engineering Architecture: Design and architect complete system solutions based on customer operational, technical, and infrastructure requirements. Translate complex requirements into executable engineering solutions and system architectures.
• Technical Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and provide advanced technical guidance in areas including:
• Enclosure cooling technologies
• Network integration, connectivity and classification
• Enclosure Power specifications and requirements
• System hardware specifications and requirements
• Rack-level infrastructure design
• Customer Requirements Analysis: Work directly with customer engineering teams to understand operational objectives, technical requirements, constraints, and system expectations. Translate customer needs into clearly defined engineering and architecture requirements.
• Engineering Drawings [TT1.1]& Technical Designs: Develop detailed system architecture drawings, technical designs, and supporting solution documentation that clearly communicate system configuration, connectivity, infrastructure, and integration requirements.
• Rack & Infrastructure Engineering: Analyze rack-level requirements, including equipment placement, rack loading, power distribution and balancing, cooling, connectivity, and other infrastructure considerations necessary to support the proposed system and datacenter architecture.
• Environmental & Facility Analysis: Evaluate environmental, power, cooling, space, and facility requirements that may impact system design, deployment, performance, or maintainability. Incorporate these considerations into proposed system solutions.
• Network Integration: Define and evaluate network integration and connectivity requirements within the overall system architecture. Ensure proposed designs appropriately address system connectivity and customer requirements.
• Hardware Requirements: Evaluate system hardware specifications and requirements to ensure selected components and configurations support the intended system architecture and customer objectives.
• Technical Requirements & Documentation Review: Review and interpret Statements of Work (SOWs), customer requirements documents, Bills of Material (BOMs), and other technical documentation to identify design requirements, constraints, dependencies, and potential technical risks.
• Courses of Action: Develop multiple Courses of Action (COAs) when appropriate to address customer requirements or technical challenges. Evaluate alternatives and clearly communicate the benefits, limitations, risks, and technical considerations associated with each option.
• Technical Recommendations: Provide recommendations regarding system performance, scalability, reliability, maintainability, infrastructure, and overall solution design. Apply technical expertise and engineering judgment to identify solutions that best satisfy customer requirements.
• Customer Technical Engagement: Serve as a technical resource during customer engagements, design discussions, solution reviews, and technical presentations. Clearly communicate complex technical concepts, architecture decisions, alternatives, and recommendations to customer engineering teams and other stakeholders.
• Cross-Functional Engineering Collaboration: Collaborate with internal engineering teams to ensure proposed architectures can be translated into executable engineering solutions. Provide technical direction and clarification regarding system requirements and architectural intent.
• Proposal Support: Support proposal development by providing system architecture expertise, technical designs, solution documentation, and recommendations necessary to accurately communicate proposed technical solutions.
• Technical Reviews: Participate in and support internal and customer technical reviews to validate system designs, confirm requirements, address technical questions, and identify potential risks or design considerations.
• Solution Optimization: Evaluate proposed architectures for opportunities to improve performance, scalability, reliability, maintainability, cooling, power utilization, network connectivity, and overall system effectiveness.
• Technical Risk Identification: Identify architectural constraints, dependencies, and technical risks during solution development and communicate potential impacts and recommended approaches to customers and internal stakeholders.
• Engineering Documentation: Develop and maintain clear, accurate, and comprehensive technical documentation supporting system architecture, designs, recommendations, and customer requirements.
• Information Security: Comply with all policies and procedures pertaining to the protection of the Company’s information assets, security, and systems and those of its clients.
Competencies
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Extensive experience in systems engineering, system architecture, infrastructure design, or a related technical discipline.
• Advanced knowledge of rack-level infrastructure and system architecture.
• Advanced understanding of networking, connectivity, power, cooling, and rack integration.
• Strong knowledge of system hardware specifications and requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to translate customer operational and technical requirements into executable engineering solutions.
• Experience developing system architecture drawings, technical designs, and supporting solution documentation.
• Experience analyzing rack loading, power balancing, cooling, environmental, and facility requirements.
• Ability to review and interpret Statements of Work (SOWs), technical requirements documents, and Bills of Material (BOMs).
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate multiple technical alternatives and develop Courses of Action (COAs) based on customer requirements and system constraints.
• Ability to assess system designs for performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Strong customer-facing communication, presentation, and technical consulting skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with customer engineering teams and internal technical teams.
• Ability to exercise sound technical judgment when evaluating complex system requirements and architectural alternatives.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
