About the Opportunity
Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Administrator / Infrastructure Architect to join our growing team in McLean, VA. This individual will play a critical role in designing, securing, scaling, and optimizing enterprise infrastructure environments across cloud and on-premises platforms.
The ideal candidate will possess strong systems administration expertise combined with proven experience in systems design, infrastructure scalability, and architecture planning. This role will be responsible for developing secure infrastructure enhancements that support new mission capabilities, improve system performance, and ensure the long-term scalability and reliability of enterprise environments.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Architecture & Scalability
Design and implement scalable, secure, and highly available infrastructure solutions.
Develop infrastructure enhancements to support emerging business and mission requirements.
Evaluate system performance and recommend architectural improvements to increase reliability, efficiency, and scalability.
Maintain and evolve software and infrastructure architecture while promoting operational best practices and innovation.
Cloud & Database Administration
Deploy, provision, manage, and secure AWS cloud resources, including:
EC2
S3
RDS
EBS
CloudWatch
VPC
Support database capacity planning, sizing, performance tuning, and ongoing administration.
Ensure cloud environments align with security and compliance requirements.
DevOps & CI/CD
Build, maintain, optimize, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, GitHub, and Jenkins.
Collaborate with development teams to streamline deployments and improve software delivery processes.
Implement Infrastructure-as-Code and automation best practices where appropriate.
Containerization & Kubernetes
Design, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters.
Ensure high availability and reliability of containerized environments.
Support development teams by maintaining stable and scalable container orchestration platforms.
Security & Systems Operations
Conduct vulnerability assessments and remediation activities.
Manage operating system and infrastructure patching across physical and cloud environments.
Administer VPN solutions and secure network connectivity.
Manage SSL/TLS certificates and ensure compliance with security standards.
Monitor system health and proactively address operational issues before they impact users.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
8+ years of experience in Systems Administration, Cloud Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, or related disciplines.
Demonstrated experience designing and scaling enterprise infrastructure environments.
Strong experience with AWS cloud services and cloud security best practices.
Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and containerized environments.
Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, GitHub, or Jenkins.
Strong understanding of networking, VPNs, SSL/TLS, and enterprise security principles.
Experience with vulnerability management, patching, and system hardening.
Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator, or similar).
Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
Knowledge of Linux and Windows enterprise environments.
Experience supporting secure government, defense, or classified environments.
Active security clearance preferred or ability to obtain one.
