Supervisory Physician Assistant

Duties

• Independently evaluates, diagnoses, treats, and manages acute and chronic medical conditions within established clinical privileges and scope of practice.
• Delivers advanced medical care in fixed facilities and during designated missions, travel, contingency operations, emergency responses, and sensitive activities.
• Establishes priorities and expectations for employees; allocates resources; evaluates performance; provides formal counseling, mentorship, and professional development; and resolves complex performance, conduct, workforce, and operational issues.
• Leads the development, review, standardization, implementation, and continuous improvement of guidelines, orders, standard operating procedures, emergency-response protocols, clinical pathways, readiness directives, and related operational policies.
• Directs comprehensive clinical, logistical, facility, and operational-readiness assessments to anticipate and identify systemic vulnerabilities and capability gaps before they impact patient care or mission execution.
• Represents the White House Medical Unit (WHMU), as designated, in multidisciplinary and interagency coordination involving military, federal, academic, and civilian healthcare organizations.
• Maintains active clinical privileges and advanced clinical competency through sustained direct patient care, operational missions, readiness exercises, and mandatory continuing professional education.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• The incumbent may be required to work outside normal duty hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call periods, and must remain capable of responding to short-notice mission requirements.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance or access. A pre-employment and recurring comprehensive background investigations are required.
• One-year supervisory probationary period required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
• Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
• Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
• This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
• This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
• The incumbent must be able to safely lift, carry, position and operate mission medical equipment and perform the physical functions required for emergency patient care and operational deployment.
• This is a mission-essential position. The incumbent may be required to report for or remain on duty during emergencies, severe weather, continuity events, or other circumstances affecting normal government operations.
• This position requires successful approval for Presidential Support Duty (PSD), commonly referred to administratively as YANKEE WHITE (YW), in accordance with applicable Department of Defense and White House Military Office requirements.
• The incumbent must successfully complete the investigation, adjudication, suitability review, nomination, and approval processes required for the designated Presidential Support position before performing duties requiring such access.
• The incumbent must meet and continuously maintain the exceptionally high standards of judgment, reliability, trustworthiness, discretion, conduct, and suitability required for Presidential Support Duty.
• Continued employment in this position is contingent upon maintaining the required TS eligibility, PSD/YW approval, White House access, and any additional Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) eligibility or access required by the assigned duties.
• The incumbent is subject to continuous vetting, periodic security review or reinvestigation, security reporting requirements, and any additional personnel-security requirements applicable to Presidential Support personnel.
• Loss, suspension, denial, or revocation of required national-security eligibility, PSD/YW approval, or White House access may render the incumbent unable to perform the essential duties of the position and may result in reassignment.

Basic Requirements for a Supervisory Physician Assistant:

Education: Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Certification: Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification.

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Exemption : You are exempt from the license requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0603 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience: A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant which includes independently evaluating, diagnosing, and managing complex conditions without on-site physician oversight in variable operational environments; directing multidisciplinary clinical operations and synchronizing medical capabilities across variable environments (military, federal, academic, and civilian); exercising supervisory responsibilities, including establishing priorities and expectations, allocating resources, and evaluating performance; and directing audits designed to identify and mitigate threats to mission readiness, evaluating findings for corrective action. This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).

Education
