Overview
One of the hottest battlegrounds in the public cloud is not happening in the cloud at all. Cloud capabilities are being extended to factory floors, hospitals, retail locations, autonomous systems, and other environments where customers need distributed hybrid infrastructure. Microsoft Azure supports these scenarios through technologies including Azure Arc and Azure Local.
The Silver Edge team implements and supports Azure Local and distributed hybrid infrastructure for U.S. Government customers, including sovereign and disconnected environments. We are seeking a Site Reliability Engineer II who will combine software engineering, systems engineering, and operational expertise to improve the reliability, scalability, security, and supportability of these services.
In this role, you will take ownership of complex service-health and deployment challenges, use telemetry and automation to prevent recurring issues, lead technical response during incidents, and partner across Engineering and Program Management to turn operational learning into durable product and service improvements.

Site Reliability Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.

Responsibilities
- Own and improve the reliability of Azure Local cloud services in sovereign environments, including deployment, availability, security, performance, capacity, and customer satisfaction.
- Support complex customer deployments and operations for Azure Local, including disconnected and air-gapped scenarios, and drive issues through diagnosis, mitigation, recovery, and prevention.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and provide technical leadership during live-site incidents, using clear communications, disciplined incident management, and sound engineering judgment.
- Analyze telemetry, service signals, and customer feedback to identify systemic risks; lead root-cause analyses and drive corrective actions, software fixes, automation, monitoring, playbooks, and self-service capabilities.
- Partner with Engineering and Program Management teams on design, testing, release readiness, and implementation of software-based solutions that improve service maturity and scalability.
- Contribute to architecture and operational-readiness decisions for current and next-generation cloud infrastructure services, with emphasis on high availability, disaster recovery, business continuity, and secure operations.
- Mentor engineers, share operational knowledge, and establish repeatable engineering practices that raise the reliability and troubleshooting capability of the broader team.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, or systems administration OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 2+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, or systems administration OR equivalent experience.

Security Clearance Requirements : Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- The successful candidate must have an active U.S. Government Top Secret Clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with Polygraph. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required pre-offer and post-hire for this role. Failure to maintain or obtain the appropriate U.S. Government clearance and/or customer screening requirements may result in employment action up to and including termination.
- Clearance Verification: This position requires successful verification of the stated security clearance to meet federal government customer requirements. You will be asked to provide clearance verification information prior to an offer of employment.
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local United States government agency customer and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport, or other approved documents, or verified US government Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4+ years of experience in software engineering, systems engineering, service engineering, or maintaining the reliability of mission-critical workloads, including coordination across multiple engineering and customer-facing teams.
- Experience with Azure Local, Azure Arc, or distributed hybrid infrastructure, including sovereign, disconnected, or air-gapped environments.
- Experience designing monitoring, alerting, deployment automation, mitigation tooling, operational playbooks, or customer self-service capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex incident response, make data-informed decisions, and drive corrective actions to completion.
- Strong collaboration, organization, prioritization, and written and verbal communication skills.
