Job Description

Duties

  • Accounts for and processes surgical instruments, to include complex loaner sets for scheduled cases, emergent cases, and clinic/ward instrumentation.
  • Packages surgical items individually (e.g., scissors, tubing, instrumentation) or assembles into trays and sets.
  • Utilizes computer instrument tracking system, logs onto system, scans set or tray, and assembles the items according to the count sheet that specifies kinds and numbers of instruments to be included.
  • Determines proper sterilization procedures, by various methods and cycles, for different types of items
  • Operates and cleans sterilizers, assures proper functioning of sterilizers by monitoring sterilization parameters, observes function diagnostic tests, and reports discrepancies or malfunctions.
  • Monitors and tracks surgical instruments using automated instrument tracking log/system, performs record keeping, tracks operations, maintains and monitors inventory records, generates purchase orders, etc., using a variety of software packages.

  • This position is required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.), unless exempted by a licensed physician.
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • This position is designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations , the incumbent may be required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical annually and thereafter.
  • This position is designated as having regular and recurring contact with children under the age of 18 and is subject to requirements of DoDI 1402.05 and AR 600-78.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position is subject to hepatitis vaccination unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes accounting for and processing surgical instruments; inspecting required instruments for cleanliness, sings of damage, deterioration, imperfection, rust, pitting, and cracks and monitors and tracks surgical instruments using automated instrument tracking log/system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of post-secondary level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as sterile processing, supply chain management, surgery, or logistics.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed post-secondary level semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
