Job Description
About the Job
At cb5, we are on a mission to find exceptional talent. Our tight-knit organization is led by five brothers, each technology leaders in their respective technical fields and driven to foster a culture of excellence through solidarity. We are seeking an Enterprise Solutions Architect to hold the technical design of a greenfield Department of Defense hybrid multi-cloud program. This team is on the front lines, shaping the systems that protect us from advanced threats. We are looking for highly motivated, results-oriented professionals who thrive on solving complex technical challenges in a dynamic environment.
The Enterprise Solutions Architect is the senior technical seat on the program and the working counterpart to the customer's lead architect. You will own one reference architecture spanning Azure, AWS and on-premises VMware Cloud Foundation, along with the design decision record that makes it enforceable rather than advisory. Three platforms are being built in parallel by different parties, so the central risk is not that one build fails. It is that all three succeed independently and do not integrate. This position is the one that prevents that. The Technical Leads for identity, network, infrastructure, cybersecurity and data report to this role, and you will hold their designs to one coherent architecture while preparing the technical courses of action the customer decides from.
This is a full time position working onsite in either Colorado Springs, CO or Huntsville, AL, requiring less than 10% travel.
Salary: $180,000 - $215,000
Key Responsibilities
The candidate will:
- Own the program reference architecture across Azure, AWS and on-premises platforms, and keep it current as the design matures.
- Own the design decision record, capturing options considered, the decision made, the rationale and the impact, so decisions are traceable rather than rediscovered.
- Serve as the working technical counterpart to the customer's lead architect, and prepare decision-ready courses of action for architecture review and executive decision.
- Provide technical direction to the Technical Leads for Identity, Network, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, and Data and Applications, and hold their designs to a common target architecture.
- Arbitrate competing technical approaches across workstreams, platforms and vendors, and make the cross-platform call when a tie has to be broken.
- Set engineering standards and design review practices, including what a design must contain before it is accepted and how it is validated.
- Own cross-platform integration so identity, network, security, data and operations patterns stay consistent regardless of which platform a workload lands on.
- Ensure Zero Trust objectives and cybersecurity requirements are designed into the architecture rather than added after the build.
- Engage the other vendors and platform providers building components of the environment, and assess their designs for fit against the target architecture.
- Hold technical baseline and configuration control until those functions stand up as separate positions.
Represent the architecture to senior government leadership, and translate mission requirements into technical direction the engineering teams can execute.
The successful candidate will:
- Be a strong innovator in process improvement and system design.
- Be able to quickly learn challenging concepts, decompose difficult service problems and provide resolution.
- Be able to create and follow standard processes and clearly document results.
- Effectively function as self-starter and identify risks, issues, and opportunities to leadership.
- Have excellent presentation, oral and written skills to facilitate effective and efficient interchanges with senior customer management and customers.
- This role offers the opportunity to set and hold the technical design of a greenfield hybrid multi-cloud environment in support of defense, intelligence and enterprise modernization programs.
Qualifications
- Must have 15, or more, years of enterprise IT engineering experience, with 8, or more, years in an enterprise architect, solutions architect or chief engineer role.
- Must have 5, or more, years leading technical teams or serving as design authority on a large-scale modernization or transformation program.
- Demonstrated ownership of a reference architecture and a design decision record spanning multiple platforms.
- Deep architecture experience across more than one domain, such as cloud platforms, infrastructure, networking, identity and cybersecurity.
- Experience designing hybrid environments that span public cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
- Architecture-level experience with at least two of Azure, AWS and VMware-based private cloud.
- Experience establishing engineering standards, design review practices and technical governance.
- Experience working alongside multiple vendors or system integrators each delivering components of one environment.
- Experience applying Zero Trust principles and DoD or federal cybersecurity requirements to an enterprise design.
- Experience translating mission or business requirements into technical direction, and presenting technical tradeoffs to senior leadership.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including briefing senior government leadership and chairing technical working sessions.
- Must meet DoD 8570 certification requirements (e.g. Sec+) within 60 days of hire.
- Must have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance, or be eligible to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications
- Have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance or Top-Secret Security Clearance with SCI eligibility.
- Have a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
- Have 1, or more, architecture or engineering certifications (e.g, TOGAF, INCOSE CSEP or ESEP, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert).
- Have experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Federal modernization initiatives.
- Have experience leading a greenfield enterprise build rather than only sustainment or incremental modernization.
- Have experience with model-based systems engineering models and tools.
- Have experience with cloud accreditation and the Risk Management Framework authorization process.
- Have experience with enterprise migration planning and wave execution.
- Have experience working in an agile environment at scale.
