We are seeking a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Engineer to own the system model for a greenfield Department of Defense hybrid multi-cloud program. This team is on the front lines, shaping the systems that protect us from advanced threats. We are looking for highly motivated, results-oriented professionals who thrive on solving complex technical challenges in a dynamic environment.
The MBSE Engineer builds and holds the system model that connects requirements, architecture, interfaces, design decisions and test coverage, so a change in one place shows its effect everywhere else rather than surfacing late. The program spans eight workstreams and three platforms, which makes cross-workstream interfaces and dependencies the most valuable thing the model captures. This is a hands-on modeling seat. You will work closely with the Enterprise Solutions Architect, who owns the reference architecture and the design decision record, and with the Requirements Manager, who owns requirements discipline. Most engineers on the program are new to model-based practice, so part of the work is making the model useful enough that teams choose to use it.
This is a full time position working onsite in either Colorado Springs, CO or Huntsville, AL, requiring less than 10% travel.
Salary: $130,000 - $145,000
Key Responsibilities
The candidate will:
- Build and maintain the program system model so architecture, requirements, interfaces and design decisions live in one connected model rather than scattered documents.
- Establish the modeling standard, including profile, method, naming, viewpoints, and what a modeled element must contain before it is accepted.
- Maintain traceability from mission requirement through architecture element to design decision, implemented component and test.
- Model interfaces and dependencies across Identity, Network, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Data and Applications, Migration and Customer Experience, so cross-workstream dependencies are visible before they become schedule problems.
- Keep the model current with the reference architecture and the design decision record, working alongside the Enterprise Solutions Architect.
- Support requirements discipline with the Requirements Manager, including decomposition, consistency of acceptance criteria, and coverage analysis.
- Produce architecture views and engineering products for design reviews, architecture review boards and government leadership, drawn from the model rather than rebuilt by hand.
- Model target and transition states so migration waves can be planned against a described end state.
- Maintain model configuration, baselines and change history so the model stays authoritative.
- Logically decompose complex mission systems into manageable components, and support studies, analyses and implementation planning.
- Coach engineers across workstreams in reading and contributing to the model, since most teams will be meeting model-based practice for the first time.

- Be able to quickly learn challenging concepts, decompose difficult service problems and provide resolution.
- Be able to create and follow standard processes and clearly document results.
- Effectively function as self-starter and identify risks, issues, and opportunities to leadership.
- Have excellent presentation, oral and written skills to facilitate effective and efficient interchanges with senior customer management and customers.
- This role offers the opportunity to establish digital engineering practice on a greenfield hybrid multi-cloud environment in support of defense, intelligence and enterprise modernization programs.
Qualifications
- Must have 5, or more, years of systems engineering or enterprise IT engineering experience, with 4, or more, years applying model-based systems engineering .
- Must have 2, or more, years as the primary owner or lead modeler of an enterprise or program level system model.
- Hands-on experience with SysML and a modeling tool such as Cameo Systems Modeler, IBM Rhapsody or Sparx Enterprise Architect.
- Proficient understanding of the systems engineering V-model and the engineering lifecycle.
- Fundamental understanding of requirements analysis and management principles, including decomposition and traceability.
- Experience modeling interfaces, dependencies and architecture views spanning multiple technical domains.
- Experience developing and editing Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) or equivalent framework products.
- Ability to logically decompose complex mission systems into manageable components.
- Experience modeling IT infrastructure or cloud environments, not only platform or hardware systems.
- Experience maintaining model configuration, baselines and change control.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting model-derived views to senior government leadership.
- Must meet DoD 8570 certification requirements (e.g. Sec+) within 60 days of hire.
- Must have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance, or be eligible to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications
- Have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance or Top-Secret Security Clearance with SCI eligibility.
- Have a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Have 1, or more, certifications in relevant areas (e.g, INCOSE ASEP or CSEP, OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional, CompTIA Security+).
- Have experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Federal modernization initiatives.
- Have experience with digital engineering practice and model-based artifacts delivered as program products.
- Have experience integrating a system model with requirements or work management tools such as DOORS, Jira or Azure DevOps.
- Have experience modeling hybrid environments spanning Azure, AWS and on-premises infrastructure.
- Have experience coaching teams new to model-based systems engineering.
- Have experience working in an agile environment.
