Job Description
About the Job
At cb5, we are on a mission to find exceptional talent. Our tight-knit organization is led by five brothers, each technology leaders in their respective technical fields and driven to foster a culture of excellence through solidarity. We are seeking an Automation and AI Lead to stand up and lead the automation, orchestration and AI capability for a greenfield Department of Defense hybrid multi-cloud program. This team is on the front lines, shaping the systems that protect us from advanced threats. We are looking for highly motivated, results-oriented professionals who thrive on solving complex technical challenges in a dynamic environment.
The Automation and AI Lead owns automation and artificial intelligence as program capabilities rather than as tools inside a single team. In this role you will set the Infrastructure as Code standard, built on Terraform and Ansible, that every engineering team builds against, direct the ServiceNow workflow and orchestration roadmap, stand up AIOps and operational analytics, and establish the AI enablement and governance model the program operates under. You will lead a small senior team that includes a ServiceNow Architect and an Infrastructure Automation and IaC Engineer, and you will place automation representation inside each technical workstream so one standard reaches Azure Government, AWS GovCloud and the on-premises VMware Cloud Foundation platform. The role is hands-on. Zero Trust delivery, landing zone build-out and migration tooling all depend on automation this team writes, not only on standards it publishes.
This is a full time position working onsite in either Colorado Springs, CO or Huntsville, AL, requiring less than 10% travel.
Salary: $170,000 – $200,000
Key Responsibilities
The candidate will:
- Own automation, orchestration and AI as program capabilities applied across every technical workstream.
- Establish and maintain the Infrastructure as Code standard, including reusable Terraform and Ansible module libraries, pipeline patterns and code review practices consumed by all engineering teams.
- Direct the ServiceNow roadmap for workflow automation, orchestration and integration, alongside the ServiceNow Architect who owns the platform.
- Design and deliver automation that spans Azure Government, AWS GovCloud and on-premises VMware Cloud Foundation, so one pattern serves all three platforms.
- Lead and mentor a growing automation and AI team, setting technical direction, reviewing designs and holding the team to a common standard.
- Place and support automation representatives inside each workstream (Identity, Network, Infrastructure, Data and Applications, Cybersecurity, Migration and Customer Experience) and keep their work consistent with the program standard.
- Build the AI Ops and operational analytics capability, including telemetry pipelines, event correlation and automated remediation.
- Establish AI enablement and governance for the program, covering approved model access, data handling, human review and alignment to current DoD direction on AI use.
- Partner with the Zero Trust, cybersecurity and DevSecOps teams so automation carries security controls, hardening and compliance evidence by default.
- Support migration by automating discovery, provisioning and wave execution tooling that reduces manual effort.
- Prepare technical courses of action, design decisions and briefing material for senior government leadership and architecture review boards.
The successful candidate will:
- Be a strong innovator in process improvement and system design.
- Be able to quickly learn challenging concepts, decompose difficult service problems and provide resolution.
- Be able to create and follow standard processes and clearly document results.
- Effectively function as self-starter and identify risks, issues, and opportunities to leadership.
- Have excellent presentation, oral and written skills to facilitate effective and efficient interchanges with senior customer management and customers.
- This role offers the opportunity to define the automation and AI foundation for a greenfield hybrid multi-cloud environment in support of defense, intelligence and enterprise modernization programs.
Qualifications
- Must have 8, or more, years of IT experience with 4 years in automation, DevSecOps or cloud engineering roles
- Must have 3, or more, years of experience working in a technical leadership or management role
- Demonstrated ownership of an enterprise automation standard, including reusable modules and pipeline patterns adopted by other teams.
- Experience with automation and configuration tools (Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, HELM, Python, Bash, etc.).
- Experience with continuous delivery tools (GitLab, ArgoCD, Jenkins, etc.).
- Experience with ServiceNow or a comparable ITSM and workflow orchestration platform.
- Experience applying AI or machine learning to operations, such as AIOps, event correlation, anomaly detection or automated remediation.
- Experience designing automation for hybrid and multi-cloud solutions.
- Understanding of networking, storage, identity, cybersecurity and DevSecOps pipelines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting technical direction to senior government leadership.
- Must meet DoD 8570 certification requirements (e.g. Sec+) within 60 days of hire.
- Must have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance, or be eligible to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications
- Have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance or Top-Secret Security Clearance with SCI eligibility
- Have a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field
- Have 1, or more, cloud or automation certifications (e.g, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, HashiCorp Terraform Associate, Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation).
- Have experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Federal cloud initiatives.
- Have experience with Zero Trust architectures and the automation behind their enforcement points.
- Have experience with ServiceNow ITOM, CMDB and Discovery.
- Have experience with model-based system engineering models and tools.
- Have experience working in an agile environment.
- Have experience administering a Red Hat Linux environment (RHEL 9.x).
