Job Description

Position Overview

CriticalTilt is seeking a senior Resident Services Engineer (RSE) to support a strategic network visibility and cybersecurity technology partner within a highly classified Federal environment in Reston, Virginia.

This is a long-term, full-time, on-site position supporting the development and evolution of a next-generation classified network environment. The selected engineer will serve as a resident technical expert for network visibility technologies and will work directly with customer engineering, cybersecurity, architecture, and professional services teams.

This is not a routine sustainment position. The environment is highly dynamic, with teams continuously building, testing, modifying, and validating network configurations and capabilities. The successful candidate must be comfortable troubleshooting in an environment where configurations and requirements evolve frequently.

The strongest candidates will combine deep networking and security fundamentals with initiative, sound technical judgment, strong customer-facing skills, and the ability to become a trusted advisor.

Key Responsibilities

* Serve as an on-site technical subject matter expert for enterprise network visibility solutions.
* Support the discovery, definition, implementation, testing, troubleshooting, and ongoing evolution of network visibility capabilities.
* Work closely with customer engineering, architecture, cybersecurity, and professional services teams.
* Analyze network traffic flows, protocols, interfaces, VLAN tagging, and related network and security characteristics to ensure visibility solutions receive and deliver the appropriate traffic.
* Support integration of network visibility technologies with enterprise networking, cybersecurity, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure.
* Troubleshoot complex technical issues within a rapidly changing engineering and test environment.
* Coordinate with local and remote technical teams when implementations span multiple systems or locations.
* Provide technical guidance from the network visibility perspective while collaborating effectively with teams responsible for routing, switching, firewalls, security tools, virtualization, and related infrastructure.
* Develop and maintain trusted-advisor relationships with customer technical personnel.
* Identify emerging requirements and potential opportunities to improve network visibility capabilities.
* Participate in technical reviews, implementation planning, and change-management activities.
* Maintain required technical and engagement documentation.
* Prepare and submit weekly activity/status reports.
* Complete required corporate, partner, and customer training and compliance activities.
* Represent the technology partner professionally in all customer interactions.
* Operate independently with limited day-to-day supervision while remaining an effective member of a larger technical team.

Required Qualifications

Active TS/SCI security clearance with current CI Polygraph.
Ability and willingness to work full-time on site in Reston, Virginia within an air-gapped classified environment.
10+ years of relevant experience in network engineering, network security, network visibility, cybersecurity engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
Strong understanding of enterprise networking concepts, including TCP/IP, Ethernet, routing and switching concepts, VLANs, network protocols, traffic flows, packet forwarding, and network segmentation.
Strong understanding of network security concepts and the interaction between network infrastructure, security controls, monitoring platforms, and visibility technologies.
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex network and/or security environments.
Ability to analyze technical problems spanning multiple technologies and organizations.
Demonstrated initiative and ability to anticipate customer and technical needs.
Ability to work independently and remain productive with limited supervision.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong customer-facing, consulting, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with technical personnel, management, and non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Highly Desired Qualifications

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

Gigamon or comparable enterprise network visibility / network packet broker technologies.
Network TAPs, packet aggregation, filtering, traffic replication, packet processing, or related visibility technologies.
Cisco enterprise networking technologies.
Enterprise firewall and security platforms, including Palo Alto Networks or similar technologies.
VMware virtualization or private-cloud environments.
Microsoft Azure or other cloud environments, including Government or classified cloud implementations.
NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF).
Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
Authority to Operate (ATO) compliance or testing.
Federal, DoD, or Intelligence Community environments.
Distributed technical environments requiring coordination with remote implementation personnel.

Relevant professional certifications are desirable and may include CISSP, CISM, CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, JNCIP, CCSP, VMware, AWS, Azure, or comparable networking, cybersecurity, cloud, or virtualization credentials.

What We Are Looking For

Technical qualifications alone will not determine success in this role.

The ideal candidate:

Takes initiative rather than waiting for individual tasks to be assigned.
Anticipates customer needs and potential technical issues.
Is comfortable working in a constantly evolving engineering environment.
Troubleshoots methodically across complex network and security architectures.
Communicates clearly and professionally with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Understands how to provide expert guidance while respecting the ownership boundaries of other technology teams.
Builds credibility and trusted relationships with customer and partner personnel.
Learns new technologies quickly and continually expands their technical expertise.

Training and Technical Enablement

The selected engineer will receive access to extensive partner technical resources and a structured product-enablement program.

The initial ramp-up is expected to include approximately 30–45 days of technical training, documentation review, hands-on learning, and shadowing, with timing adjusted based on the engineer’s existing experience and readiness.

For this reason, candidates with strong enterprise networking, security, and network visibility fundamentals are encouraged to apply even if they do not already possess deep expertise with every product or feature used in the environment.

Work Environment

This position is performed primarily on site in Reston, Virginia within a secure, air-gapped classified environment. Routine remote work is not available due to the nature of the mission.

Occasional customer-directed travel may be required.

The role is best suited for an engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems, working in evolving environments, learning new technologies, and serving as a trusted technical advisor rather than maintaining a static production environment.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this position is:

$165,000–$185,000 annually

Final base salary will be based on relevant technical experience, network visibility expertise, clearance status, customer-facing experience, and overall alignment with the requirements of the position.

CriticalTilt employees are eligible for company benefits, paid time off, company holidays, and other benefits in accordance with applicable company plans and policies.
