Job Description

Koniag IT Systems, LLC a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking an Integration/Middleware Engineer to support KITS and our government customer. The position is remote. This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain a Public Trust.

We offer competitive compensation and an extraordinary benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance, 401K with company matching, flexible spending accounts, paid holidays, three weeks paid time off, and more.

The Integration/Middleware Engineer provides advanced technical engineering support for CLIENT's enterprise integration platforms, middleware environments, API management services, and data pipeline infrastructure. This individual brings deep integration engineering expertise to the design, build, operation, and sustainment of CLIENT's enterprise integration environment.

This role is focused specifically on integration engineering and middleware platform operations - the technical discipline of connecting enterprise systems, automating data flows, managing APIs, and ensuring reliable, secure, and performant integration services across CLIENT's on-premises and cloud application portfolio. The Integration / Middleware Engineer works at the platform and architecture level, designing and building integration solutions that enable CLIENT's enterprise applications to communicate and operate effectively as a cohesive enterprise environment.

This individual must demonstrate deep hands-on expertise in enterprise integration platforms, middleware technologies, API management, and data pipeline engineering, with the ability to independently design, build, and troubleshoot complex integrations in a federal enterprise environment that spans on-premises infrastructure, AWS, and Microsoft Azure Government.

Key Responsibilities:

Integration Platform Engineering & Operations:
  • Design, build, configure, and maintain CLIENT's enterprise integration platform and middleware environments, ensuring reliable, secure, and well-performing data flows and system integrations
  • Engineer and maintain integration interfaces, data pipelines, message queues, and event-driven integration workflows across CLIENT's enterprise application portfolio
  • Develop and maintain integration platform configurations, connection management settings, and interface administration procedures
  • Monitor integration platform health, performance, and error rates using Government-provided monitoring tools and dashboards
  • Detect, diagnose, and resolve integration failures, data pipeline errors, and middleware incidents independently for moderately complex issues
  • Escalate complex or cross-domain integration incidents to the Senior Application Operations Engineer or Applications & Integration Lead as appropriate
  • Evaluate integration platform performance and implement engineering improvements that enhance reliability, throughput, and operational efficiency

API Management Engineering:
  • Design, build, and maintain API configurations, policies, and security controls in CLIENT's enterprise API management platform
  • Engineer API gateway configurations, including rate limiting, authentication, authorization, and traffic management policies
  • Develop and maintain API documentation, including endpoint specifications, data schemas, and integration guides
  • Monitor API performance, availability, and security posture, taking proactive action to address issues and prevent service degradation
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex API connectivity, performance, and security issues independently
  • Support API lifecycle management activities, including versioning, deprecation, and retirement of API endpoints
  • Maintain accurate API inventory, endpoint configuration records, and security policy documentation

Middleware Configuration & Administration:
  • Administer and maintain CLIENT's middleware platforms, including message brokers, enterprise service buses, and event streaming platforms as applicable
  • Engineer middleware configurations, including topic management, queue administration, consumer group management, and message routing rules
  • Monitor middleware platform health and performance, taking proactive action to address capacity, performance, and availability issues
  • Support middleware platform upgrades, patching, and version management activities in accordance with ITIL 4 change management practices
  • Develop and maintain middleware administration runbooks, configuration standards, and operational procedures
  • Coordinate with the Infrastructure and Platform Operations team on middleware platform infrastructure requirements and capacity planning

Integration Security Engineering:
  • Engineer integration security configurations aligned with FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP, and CLIENT cybersecurity policies
  • Implement secure integration patterns, including encrypted data transmission, certificate management, OAuth 2.0 / SAML authentication, and API security controls
  • Support Zero Trust Architecture implementation across integration platforms in coordination with the Microsoft Infrastructure and Network teams
  • Conduct integration security engineering reviews and provide recommendations for improving CLIENT's integration security posture
  • Manage integration platform certificates, credentials, and secrets in accordance with CLIENT security and key management requirements
  • Support security assessment activities and audit evidence collection for integration platforms and API management services

Cloud Integration Engineering:
  • Engineer and maintain integrations between CLIENT's on-premises systems and cloud environments, including AWS commercial, AWS GovCloud, Microsoft Azure Government, and Microsoft 365
  • Support Azure Integration Services engineering, including Logic Apps, Service Bus, Event Grid, and API Management configurations
  • Coordinate with the Microsoft Infrastructure Administrator (Senior) and Infrastructure and Platform Operations team on cloud integration requirements and architecture
  • Engineer and maintain cloud-based data pipeline workflows and event-driven integration patterns
  • Support FedRAMP compliance for cloud-based integration services and API management platforms
  • Maintain accurate cloud integration architecture documentation and configuration records

Integration Testing & Quality Assurance:
  • Develop and execute integration test plans, test cases, and validation procedures for new and modified integration interfaces
  • Conduct integration regression testing to validate that platform changes do not introduce failures or performance degradation
  • Support end-to-end integration testing for application releases and major platform changes
  • Maintain accurate integration test documentation, test results, and defect records in the Government ITSM platform
  • Coordinate with application teams and the Senior Application Operations Engineer on integration test planning and execution
  • Provide integration test results and quality assurance data to support release readiness reviews

Required Qualifications:
