Job Description
MCSG Technologies is seeking a senior Linux Systems Engineer in support of lab and IT operations at NASA GSFC. The candidate will provide Linux administration for all IT systems (developed, procured, and maintained) for services utilized across the Directorate. This includes continuous monitoring of the application environment, multi-use servers, software licensing, and virtual machines. This position requires strong technical judgment, a security-minded approach, hands-on troubleshooting experience, and the vision to help build a more efficient, resilient, and future-ready IT infrastructure from both a technical and resource perspective. Hybrid with 3 days onsite Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD
- Installs, configures, and maintains Linux operating systems (Ubuntu and RHEL).
- Troubleshoot technical problems with system hardware, software, and networking.
- Perform system maintenance and software installations in a Linux environment.
- Schedule installations, upgrades, and maintenance in accordance with established IT policies and procedures.
- Maintain monthly security patches as required to address cybersecurity risks.
- Utilizes configuration management tools (Ansible) to ensure consistency across systems.
- Supports ongoing operations and maintenance of private and public Apache webservers.
- Maintains customer-facing services such as code scanning tools, Confluence and Gitlab.
- Conducts routine hardware and software audits of workstations and servers to ensure compliance with established standards, configuration guidelines, and IT security policies.
- Configure IT hardware, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with our standards and project requirements.
- Provide continuous monitoring of the application environment, multi-use servers, software licensing, and virtual machines, while maintaining a current capabilities list and supporting interested parties in utilizing available services/applications.
- Configure and maintain IT Datacenter hardware, software, and services including support ticket systems, virtual and physical servers, backup and recovery environments, license servers, and other shared servers.
- Deploy computer updates as approved by the configuration control board and maintain a comprehensive configuration management plan covering disk space management, workstation and server configuration/management, back-up procedures, software licensing configuration, operations plan, and document them in the system security plan.
- Develop and maintain thorough documentation of installation, system architecture, configuration, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Experience building, configuring, and troubleshooting systems in a Linux environment.
- Experience in Linux as a power user or administrator along with shell scripting expertise.
- Experience in production deployment, monitoring, and operational support.
- Knowledge of configuration management.
- Knowledge of networking and TCP/IP.
- Experienced with system imaging and migration.
- Experience with computer backup software.
- Knowledge of patch management.
- Must be able to acquire elevated user privileges in compliance with Federal standards for access to government systems.
- Effective issue triage and troubleshooting skills to resolve technical problems quickly.
- Ability to innovate and propose alternative solutions to resolve issues.
- Team and customer-focused, strong work ethic, adaptable to change, able to multitask and work in a cooperative environment with shared responsibilities.
- Possess strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience in executing required job duties in a dynamic environment.
- Recent experience with NASA GSFC system administration, network, and security policies and procedures.
- Experience with supporting and securing Docker services and containers
- Experience hosting and managing Gitlab or similar services
- Experienced with Ansible and IBM BigFix (HCL BigFix) for enterprise endpoint management, automated patch deployment, and security remediation.
- Experienced with SentinelOne (S1) for endpoint detection and response (EDR), threat hunting, and automated policy enforcement.
- Experienced with Red Hat Satellite for lifecycle management, content delivery, and patch deployment across RHEL-based environments.
- Experienced with various server types (web, file, license, application, etc.)
- Familiarity with continuous integration, continuous delivery (CI/CD), and Agile software delivery.
- Familiarity with compliance requirements of the NIST FIPS/FISMA or other formal IT Security compliance program.
At least 12 years of experience in providing computer systems administration for Linux (RHEL or Ubuntu) systems.
BA/BS or higher preferred, in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Assurance, Software Engineering or other related disciplines or equivalent experience.
Individual must meet government NAC and citizenship/ permanent residency requirements for access to NASA GSFC. Background investigation will be performed as a requirement of the job.
