To attract and retain highly qualified candidates, selectees may be eligible for a recruitment incentive of up to 20% or, for eligible current federal employees, a relocation incentive of up to 15%. Eligibility for a relocation incentive requires proof of a change in residence and an assignment at a worksite in a different geographic area greater than or equal to 50 miles from the prior worksite. Employees must sign a written service agreement completing a specified period of employment with the FBI at the new duty station. Recruitment and relocation incentives cannot be combined.

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Engineer, deploy, and maintain enterprise IT systems and applications
  • Develop software, automation tools, APIs, and integrations using languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or C#
  • Apply AI/ML technologies to support analytics, automation, and system optimization
  • Support cloud and hybrid architectures (AWS, Azure, FBI approved environments)
  • Perform systems analysis, troubleshooting, security compliance, and risk assessments
  • Implement DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and infrastructure-as-code
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including system engineers, cybersecurity specialists, data architects, and program managers and provide technical guidance

Specialized Experience (SE)

GS-9: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-7 level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Provided IT support for hardware, software, or network issues and resolving routine technical problems.
  • Utilized scripts or automation tools (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to streamline operation
  • Analyzed work process and performed maintenance in assigned areas that are of limited scope and difficulty

GS-11: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-9 level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Configured, and troubleshot IT systems, applications, or networks and implemented IT security controls such as patching, access management, or endpoint protection
  • Utilized AI/Machine learning or automation scripts, tools, or workflows (e.g., PowerShell, Python, API integrations, data driven applications)
  • Assisted in developing and coding simple scripts, or automation tools (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to streamline operations
  • Updated technical processes, standards, or documentation to support IT operations

GS-12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-11 level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Performed advanced troubleshooting related to performance, integration, data integrity, or system architecture
  • Assisted with the development of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, secure coding, AI/Machine Learning innovation or Agile methodologies
  • Created and updated technical and procedural information in writing to provide IT system guidance or recommendations to other IT professionals

GS-13: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-12 level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Performed advanced troubleshooting related to performance, integration, data integrity, or system architecture
  • Produced technical documentation such as architecture diagrams, design documents, and deployment guides
  • Developed processes such as CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, secure coding, AI/Machine Learning innovation or Agile methodologies
  • Provided advice or reports to management regarding technical issues which pertain to the planning, developing, implementing, operating and maintaining of the organization's IT systems

Desired Skills

Desired skills are NOT mandatory and will NOT be utilized to minimally qualify applicants. Desired Skills are:
  • Experience with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing frameworks.
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages and development environments
  • Experience with large scale data processing, APIs, containerization, orchestration, automation, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with DevSecOps, infrastructure-as-code, and secure software development lifecycle

Education

All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:

GS-9: Applicant must have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

GS-11: Applicant must have a Ph.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related.

GS-12 & 13: Education may not be substituted for SE at these grades.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.

    • The FBI is in the Executive Branch of the federal government. It is one of the components of the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FBI is the principle investigative arm of the DOJ. All FBI positions are in the excepted service.
