JOB SUMMARY
The Aviation Support Unit oversees and manages the Safety Management System, aircraft maintenance, quality assurance, datalink/special mission equipment, and asset management for a fleet of over 100 aircraft nationwide. ASU ensures the airworthiness and mission readiness of the entire fleet, upholding the highest standards of operational excellence and safety across all missions.
KEY REQUIREMENTS

- Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance
- Some travel required to distant facilities for repair, maintenance, training or consulting on aircraft matters.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is usually performed from work stands, where parts worked on are in hard to reach places that require climbing, standing, stooping, bending, stretching and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to twenty (20) pounds, occasionally may lift items that weigh fifty (50) pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is performed in a heated but not air conditioned hanger. Some maintenance and repair may, as circumstances require be performed outside in inclement weather. Dirt, oil, grease and water are encountered in carrying out the work.
- Duties require occasionally working near operating turbine engines, or rotating machinery, such as drills, lathes, grinders, etc.
- Fumes are encountered from volatile fuels, such as cleaning solvents, paint spray and gasoline.
- Some duties are accomplished in unprotected areas where dust, rain, snow, sun and wind are encountered with temperatures ranging from 100 degrees F in the summer to below freezing in the winter with protection from the elements being the type of clothing worn.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Ensure mission capability of turbine powered aircraft by maintaining these aircraft to airworthiness standards as defined by the rules under which such aircraft are operated.
- Making and inspecting repairs to a variety of complex turbine aircraft systems, sub-systems, assemblies, equipment and aerodynamic surfaces such as flight control, hydraulic, oil, fuel, pneumatic, environmental, avionics, electrical systems, landing gear assemblies, and turbine engines components.
- Utilizes test equipment, maintenance manual procedures, computer databases, wiring diagrams, blueprints, visual checks, and other resources to troubleshoot (trace, identify, and locate), and diagnose systems to determine the type and extent of repairs needed and to make the required repairs and perform operational tests.
- Highly skilled in interpreting written and verbal descriptions of discrepancies, malfunctions, anomalies, and aircraft performance related complaints from pilots and determines the cause(s) and devices and pursues a scheme to return the aircraft to airworthy status. In-depth knowledge in detecting malfunctions during routine and non-routine inspections, and repairing as needed.
- Assumes full responsibility for parts, equipment, tools, inspection, diagnosis, repairs and all technical decisions pertaining to the airworthiness of the aircraft. Inspects, repairs and certifies that work performed was completed in accordance with best industry practices and standards and in compliance with applicable FAA regulations.

Specialized Experience (SE)
GS-12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
- Working with Fixed Wing Aircrafts with diagnosis and repair of a variety of components, systems, assemblies, and aircraft control surfaces including power plants, propellers, wings, flaps, rudders, ailerons, hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic systems, oil, fuel, and landing gear assemblies.
- Interpreting written and verbal descriptions of discrepancies, malfunctions, anomalies, and aircraft performance related complaints from pilots and determines the cause(s) and devices and pursues a scheme to return the aircraft to airworthy status.
- Using computer based aircraft maintenance and parts inventory tracking programs.
- Communicating orally and in written communication to effectively and persuasively interact with others; compose summaries and reports; document needs and requirements.
