Job Description
Cloud Platforms | Azure | Microsoft 365 | GCP | Automation
Tensley Consulting is seeking a Software Engineer – Site Reliability to support the design, build, maintenance, and operation of secure cloud and enterprise infrastructure across government and corporate environments. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on cloud operations, automation, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, DevOps practices, and custom tooling — not traditional systems administration.
The SRE will support Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365/O365, GCC High/Gov Cloud, and Google Cloud environments, helping develop scalable and reliable infrastructure, modernize application deployments, and build repeatable, well-architected solutions. This role operates in a GitOps model with a strong emphasis on code quality, peer review, automation, reliability, and engineering discipline while supporting security and compliance requirements aligned with federal standards.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience or strong exposure in SRE, DevOps, cloud engineering, software engineering, or enterprise IT infrastructure support. This role is well-suited for someone who learns quickly, contributes with limited ramp-up time, works independently with appropriate guidance, and has a strong interest in building reliable, scalable, and automated infrastructure solutions.
Key Responsibilities
-Support the design, maintenance, and operation of secure cloud infrastructure across Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365/O365, GCC High/Gov -Cloud, and Google Cloud environments.
-Monitor system performance, availability, reliability, and operational health.
-Support incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis for infrastructure, application, and integration issues.
-Contribute to automation efforts using scripting, infrastructure-as-code, and DevOps workflows.
-Design, develop, and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automation processes.
-Support GitOps practices, including code reviews, branching strategies, and merge request workflows.
-Identify operational inefficiencies and reduce manual work through automated, version-controlled solutions.
-Build custom tooling, automation, or services to solve integration and orchestration challenges.
-Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve system performance, scalability, security, and reliability.
-Develop and maintain technical documentation, including SOPs, implementation guides, architecture notes, and technical designs.
-Support on-site IT operations as needed.
Required Skills
-4-7 years of hands-on experience in software engineering, site reliability engineering, DevOps, cloud engineering, or enterprise IT infrastructure support.
-Expertise in Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365/O365 environments.
-Experience designing, building, maintaining, or supporting cloud infrastructure.
-Expertise in infrastructure monitoring, alerting, incident response, troubleshooting, and operational support.
-Expertise in automation and scripting using PowerShell, Python, or similar languages.
-Expertise in CI/CD tools, DevOps workflows, and version-controlled deployment practices.
-Expertise in Git-based development practices, including code reviews, branching strategies, and merge request workflows.
-Expertise in infrastructure-as-code concepts and tools such as Terraform, ARM templates, or similar.
-Experience identifying operational inefficiencies and supporting efforts to reduce manual work through automation.
-Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively in a team environment.
-Verifiable work history with consistent tenure and demonstrated performance.
-Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation, including SOPs, implementation guides, and architecture notes.
Desired Skills
-Expertise in software engineering fundamentals and compiled languages such as Go, C#, C/C++, Java, Rust, or similar.
-Expertise in Google Cloud Platform and/or Microsoft Azure Government, GCC High, or Gov Cloud environments.
-Expertise in Terraform, including module development, state management, or provider concepts.
-Experience contributing to or debugging Terraform provider code.
-Expertise in containerization technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.
-Expertise in service mesh technologies such as Istio.
-Expertise in Entra ID / Azure AD, including service principals, conditional access, and Graph API.
-Expertise in GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar CI/CD tools.
-Expertise in advanced PowerShell, PowerShell modules, or Desired State Configuration.
-Expertise in monitoring, observability, and alerting solutions for distributed systems.
-Strong networking fundamentals across Layers 3–7.
-Expertise in Zero Trust architecture and federal security frameworks such as NIST 800-53, 800-171, 800-172, or 800-207.
-Experience supporting corporate IT, consulting, government, or Intelligence Community environments.
Education / Experience
-4-7 years of relevant experience in software engineering, site reliability engineering, DevOps, cloud engineering, or enterprise IT infrastructure support.
-Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
-Additional relevant technical experience, certifications, or hands-on project work may be considered in place of a degree.
