Summary:
The Research Physiologist I supports the conduct of human performance and environmental physiology research at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM). This position is responsible for coordinating and conducting laboratory- and field-based human-subjects research focused on physiological responses to heat, cold, and high-altitude environments.
The successful candidate will support study operations, physiological data collection, regulatory compliance activities, exercise testing, clinical laboratory procedures, and field research conducted at military installations throughout the United States.

The annual salary range for this position is $85,000.00 to $110,000.00.

Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
Human Subjects Research
- Conduct and support physiological data collection during laboratory and field research studies.
- Collect, monitor, and document physiological measurements including:
- Oxygen consumption (VO₂)
- Metabolic rate
- Heart rate
- Core temperature
- Skin temperature
- Skin blood flow
- Ventilatory and pulmonary function measurements
- Assist with studies evaluating human performance in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments.
Research Study Coordination
- Coordinate day-to-day execution of laboratory and field-based research protocols.
- Schedule study participants and coordinate research activities with investigators and support staff.
- Manage study logistics, equipment preparation, and research supplies.
- Coordinate transportation of equipment and biological samples.
Regulatory and Compliance Support
- Prepare and maintain Institutional Review Board (IRB) and human subjects research documentation.
- Support protocol submissions, amendments, continuing reviews, and compliance requirements.
- Maintain study records in accordance with federal and institutional requirements.
Exercise Physiology and Clinical Support
- Conduct exercise and metabolic assessments including:
- Maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max) testing
- Submaximal endurance testing
- Resting ventilation testing
- Pulmonary function testing
- Operate blood gas analyzers including NOVA, Radiometer, and iSTAT systems.
- Support specimen collection, handling, and processing activities.
Data Analysis and Scientific Support
- Organize and manage physiological research data.
- Prepare figures, tables, and reports for scientific publications and presentations.
- Support manuscript development and conference presentations.
- Communicate research findings to scientific and military stakeholders.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Environmental Physiology, Human Performance, Kinesiology, Physiology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience supporting human subjects research and study coordination.
- Experience conducting physiological and exercise testing.
- Experience working in laboratory and field research environments.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a favorable Tier 3 Background Investigation and suitability determination.
- Must be eligible for Common Access Card (CAC) issuance and access to government facilities and systems.
- Travel Requirements:
- Position is primarily onsite at USARIEM in Natick, Massachusetts.
- Travel throughout the Continental United States (CONUS) may be required.
- Support military field studies, environmental physiology research activities, and scientific conferences.
- Ability to travel to military installations, remote research sites, and high-altitude environments.
- Occasional evening, weekend, and extended work hours may be required to support field data collection activities.
- Experience supporting military or Department of Defense research programs.
- Expertise in:
- Heat physiology
- Cold physiology
- High-altitude physiology
- Human performance research
- Phlebotomy experience.
- Experience operating blood gas analyzers.
- Experience supporting field studies at military installations.
