The R&D Software Engineer designs, develops, and transitions software solutions that supports the client's research and operational missions. This role focuses on transforming research concepts, operational needs, and emerging technologies into reliable, fieldable software. The engineer works in a hands‑on, applied R&D environment alongside multidisciplinary teams to build and integrate software with sensors, autonomous systems, and data pipelines. Success in this role requires strong engineering fundamentals, adaptability to evolving requirements, and a bias toward delivering practical, deployable solutions.

Core Responsibilities:
Design, develop, test, and maintain software supporting AFCEC R&D initiatives
Participate in Agile/Scrum development processes and technical reviews
Develop desktop, mobile, and service‑based applications as project needs require
Integrate software with hardware systems including sensors, imaging systems, and unmanned platforms
Support AI/ML, computer vision, and data processing workflows where applicable
Contribute to rapid prototyping, demonstrations, field testing, and transition activities
Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and government stakeholders
Document designs, implementations, and system behavior in accordance with internal standards
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., C++, C#, Java, Kotlin, Python, JavaScript)
Experience with collaborative software development practices
Ability to work on‑site in lab and field environments
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Preferred:
Experience with robotics, autonomy, or unmanned systems (UAS/UGV)
Experience with AI/ML, computer vision, or sensor data processing
Familiarity with microservices, containerization, or distributed systems
Experience integrating software with hardware or embedded systems
Prior experience supporting DoD, federal, or research programs
Clearance / Eligibility:
Ability to obtain and maintain required background checks or security clearance
