Range Officer

Duties

• Directly responsible for the execution and cost accounting of the operating budgets.
• Manage range activities to ensure safe operation of ranges and training land in accordance with AR 385-63, DA PAM 385-63, and other applicable regulations and guidance.
• Manage Installation activities to execute the Army Sustainable Range Program (SRP) core programs, the Range and Training Land Program (RTLP) and Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program in accordance with AR 350-19.
• Responsible for the execution and cost accounting of the operating budgets.
• Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set priorities and establishes schedules for work completion.
• Develop solutions to range problems and recommendations for changes to superiors.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must be qualified as Contract Officer Representative within one year of appointment.
• Must attend and complete Department of the Army Range Safety Course within one year of appointment as range officer.
• Incumbent of this position will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
• Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
• This is a Term position scheduled to last 3 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes planning, coordinating and monitoring range training; assist in developing budget for mission requirements; providing Sustainable Range Program (SRP) development and modernization services; and provides guidance on current policies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).

• Term Appointment NTE - Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 4 Years. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years, up to eight (8) years. With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years.
• Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a term appointment will be appointed/converted into a term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
