Description

The Health Communication Specialist develops, implements, and evaluates science-based public health communication campaigns, educational materials, outreach strategies, and digital content supporting CDC public health initiatives. The position focuses on creating culturally relevant messaging that improves awareness, prevention, and management of public health issues.

The specialist collaborates with CDC subject matter experts, program staff, partners, and communications teams to produce high-quality communication products aligned with CDC communication standards and public health best practices.

Requirements

  • Develop culturally appropriate public health communication campaigns and outreach initiatives.
  • Create educational materials, fact sheets, brochures, presentations, toolkits, and digital content.
  • Write, edit, and review communication materials for accuracy, clarity, grammar, tone, and consistency.
  • Develop message maps, talking points, Q&As, social media content, and promotional materials.
  • Coordinate communication and outreach activities with CDC staff and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with media inquiries, crisis communication responses, and public information dissemination.
  • Conduct audience analysis, focus groups, surveys, and stakeholder interviews.
  • Support website content development and web communications initiatives.
  • Produce graphics, multimedia content, videos, and visual communication products.
  • Monitor communication campaign performance and analyze website/social media metrics.
  • Ensure all materials comply with CDC branding, Section 508 accessibility, and Clear Communication standards.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging public health communication trends and best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Health Communication, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in health communications, public relations, or public health outreach.
  • Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills.
  • Experience developing communication materials for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital communication platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting CDC, HHS, or federal public health programs.
  • Familiarity with social media strategy and digital marketing.
  • Experience with graphic design, multimedia production, or website content management.
  • Knowledge of Section 508 accessibility standards and inclusive communication practices.
