Job description
This position will serve as a technical bridge between advanced AI research and production engineering, tasked with developing and evaluating LLM-powered services and semantic knowledge systems for the Compendia Data Platform to meet critical mission requirements.
This is a hands-on role to build production-grade AI and data capabilities and evaluation frameworks and metrics, in support of the 2026 roadmap and parallel customer commitments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and deploy AI-enabled services for the Compendia Data Platform (CDP), including LLM-based NLP capabilities and interoperable (agentic) components.
- Develop and maintain evaluation frameworks for LLM - ontology/knowledge base integration, including quantitative metrics, baselines, error analysis, and reporting to support defensible architecture decisions.
- Support ontology lifecycle management (modeling, inference, validation, and lifecycle workflows) as the ontology module matures from MVP to GA.
- Partner with product and engineering to improve platform stability, performance, and scalability for CDP v1.8 and beyond.
- Contribute to proofs of concept (PoCs), demos, and mission-aligned analytics workflows while sustaining LANL delivery commitments.
- Stay current on relevant research and emerging patterns for semantic engineering, LLM evaluation, and production AI systems; translate findings into implementable, testable solutions.
- Contribute to a high-performing team culture by delivering mission-aligned analytics and software tools that ensure high customer satisfaction and meet strict delivery commitments.
You MUST have:
- 2+ years of strong Python skills and experience delivering production software (APIs/services), including testing and version control.
- 2+ years of experience with NLP and/or modern LLM workflows (prompting, retrieval, fine-tuning/adaptation, and/or tool/agent integration) and an understanding of evaluation considerations.
- 2+ years of experience designing experiments and quantitative evaluation (metrics, baselines, error analysis) and communicating results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a DOE "Q" or DoD Top Secret clearance.
It's GREAT if you also have:
- Familiarity with semantic technologies (knowledge graphs, ontologies, reasoning/inference, schema/ontology management) or a strong interest in learning quickly.
- Comfort working in a modern development environment (e.g., VS Code), collaborating in a team, and driving consistent progress across parallel priorities.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Math, Engineering, or a related field
- Master's degree preferred
