Job Description

Duties

  • Work in a telecommunications station, as a Language Specialist on a rotating shift ensuring the continuous movement of voice and data communications between one location to another, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Utilize normal linguistics patterns and specialized military, professional, highly technical, and scientific terminology in translating documents and information.
  • Assist technical personnel in their activities of installation, repair, troubleshooting, operations and maintenance of station equipment and systems.
  • Perform intensive research to determine fine shades of meaning on highly specialized terminology to select and express the most appropriate technical word or phrase to present/preserve the intent of the original text.
  • Perform activities related to the Station operations and maintenance which include but are not limited to: routine operator level Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services on Station equipment.
  • Develop reports and coordinate with the command and other agencies and stakeholders in regard to the station's performance and operation.

  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe one year specialized experience that demonstrates the possession of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for immediate success in the position. Such experience is typically in or directly related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience would be demonstrated by translating and interpreting highly technical information or material from Russian into English and vice versa; editing complex technical translations and interpretations from Russian to English or vice versa; and assisting with developing technical reports or research.

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in one of the following: the Russian language from an English-speaking college or university, OR English from a college or university in Russia, OR translating or interpreting where English and Russian were prerequisites.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
