Description:

Waypoint’s client is seeking a Junior Systems / Software Safety Engineer to support the development and implementation of system safety programs within a defense environment. This role focuses on identifying, assessing, and mitigating hazards across the system lifecycle while ensuring compliance with MIL-STD-882E safety standards.



The selected candidate will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to support safety analysis, documentation, and risk mitigation efforts across a portfolio of mission-critical systems.



Responsibilities:

• Support the development and implementation of system safety programs in accordance with MIL-STD-882E.


• Assist in conducting and documenting hazard analyses, including identification, assessment, and mitigation of system risks.


• Support development and tracking of mitigation strategies following the system safety design order of precedence.


• Develop safety documentation, including Safety Assessment Reports, risk assessments, and root cause analyses.


• Assist in evaluating system designs to ensure compliance with safety requirements across the lifecycle.


• Support hazard tracking and risk management activities for system safety programs.


• Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate safety considerations into system development efforts.


• Participate in safety reviews, testing activities, and analysis efforts.

Required:

• Active Secret clearance.


• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Systems, Safety, or related discipline).


• 0–3 years of relevant experience in systems or software safety engineering.


• Basic knowledge of system safety principles, regulations, and hazard mitigation techniques.


• Experience conducting risk analysis, preferably within weapons systems or defense environments.


• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.


• Ability to work on-site in Huntsville, AL (or relocate).

Desired:

• Experience applying MIL-STD-882E in system safety programs.


• Experience supporting Agile development, MBSE, or Air and Missile Defense systems.


• Experience with tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Cameo, or MagicDraw.


• Experience supporting DoD or defense-related programs.


• Experience participating in system safety reviews and testing environments.
