The mission of the FBI is to protect the American People and uphold the Constitution of the United States.

Major Duties

As the FBI's Human Resources Officer (HRO), the individual serves as the FBI's human capital/resources leader, responsible for managing the human capital/resources of the FBI. The HRO reports to the FBI's Operational Director for the Human Capital Branch. The HRO is responsible for the human resources staff of approximately 380 employees, as well as, coordinating with human resources field office representatives to meet hiring objectives.

The general responsibilities of the HRO include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Lead all aspects of the FBI's human capital operations to include workforce planning; hiring and selection; employee development; and functions such as compensation, benefits, awards, etc.
  • Design and implement a rigorous workforce plan to enhance the FBI's human capital effectiveness and build the organizational capability to ensure the FBI has the depth and breadth of talent necessary to meet its changing and growing mission.
  • Lead the recruitment effort necessary to effectively and efficiently meet hiring targets within the current budget environment while building a best practices talent acquisition program.
  • Advance the use of technology and guide numerous efforts to automate processes and improve all human resources systems.
  • Drive general HR process and productivity improvements to ensure exceptional and timely client service and operational excellence.

    The FBI is in the Executive Branch of the federal government. It is one of the components of the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FBI is the principal investigative arm of the DOJ. All FBI positions are in the excepted service.

    The selectee with the exception of current FBI SES employees, will be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period as a condition of retaining an SES appointment in the FBI.

    New Federal employees must serve a one-year probationary period. The probationary periods will be served concurrently.
