Job Description

Duties

  • In a developmental capacity, you will perform progressively more difficult and responsible assignments and tasks associated with the work of a Deactivation Furnace Operator (Explosive Operator/FLO)
  • Coordinate adjustments between and among the various components of the system to maintain the prescribed temperature of furnace, air pressure, etc.
  • Monitor various types of gauges and meters to detect and correct variations from established tolerances.
  • Perform operations in the renovation, modification, demilitarization, care, and preservation of ammunition and explosives ranging from small arms up through 280 millimeter, to include mines, grenades, and rockets.
  • Perform the disassembly and breakdown of ammunition items by operating a variety of machines, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Destroy explosives, ammunition, and propellants by detonation and burning, following a variety of procedures specific to the particular items being destroyed.
  • Operate electric-, diesel-, or gasoline-powered fork lift trucks to move, stack and unstack, and load and unload materials in and about warehouses, storage areas, loading docks, and on and off vehicles, etc.
  • Operate fork lifts capable of lifting up to 10,000 pounds to load, unload, stack, unstack, re-warehouse, and move boxes, crates, packages, pallets, or loose items.
  • Operate special-purpose computerized industrial equipment involved in the controlled demilitarization of conventional munitions.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must meet the requirements of AMCR 350-4, Training and Certification Program for Personnel Working in Ammunition Operations.
  • Position is subject to random drug testing IAW AR 600-85.
  • Must complete hazardous waste management training within 6 months of appointment.
  • Position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • Position is subject to AR 190-11, Physical Security of Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives (AA and E).

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Deactivation Furnace Operator (Expl Oper/FLO) without more than normal supervision. Experience performing a variety of operations in renovation, modification, demilitarization and preservation of ammunition and explosives to include: disassembly and breakdown of ammunition items, destroying explosives by detonation and burning following procedures specific to the particular item being destroyed. Experience operating a forklift. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Deactivation Furnace Operator works on hard surfaces in operations requiring walking, bending, reaching, and long periods of standing; occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds. Explosives Operator work involves lifting and carrying items weighing up to 45 pounds; and working on production lines at rhythmic pace for extended periods, including standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and manipulating parts and using machines and hand tools. During fork lift operation, physical effort is required in braking and steering, manipulation of clutch, shift, lifting and tilting mechanisms.

Working Conditions: Deactivation Furnace Operator works in close proximity to munitions containing explosives; is exposed to prevailing weather conditions; and works with equipment which generates heat sometimes up to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. Subject to assignment to either of two shifts on a regular or rotating basis. Explosives Operator work is performed on the demolition range and outside on ramps and storage areas when weather is often inclement. There are assignments where dirt, grease, noise, and odors are often disagreeable. Deactivation Furnace Operator/Explosives Operator is required to wear protective clothing that is specially made and treated for working on explosives, including safety shoes, glasses, gas masks, and coveralls. There is a chance of injuries ranging from loss of life to burns, cuts, bruises, sprains, and nausea.
