Duties

As a PUBLIC AFFAIRS SPECIALIST, GS-1035-09, you will collect, assemble, prepare and disseminate information concerning the various activities of the state's NG. Perform other duties as assigned. This position is located in the Joint Force Headquarters -State, Personal Staff, Public Affairs Office (PAO).

  • KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. If you are not sure you are eligible for military membership.
  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance within one year of appointment.
  • ELIGIBLE FOR SITUATIONAL TELEWORK ONLY, INCLUDING EMERGENCY AND OPM PRESCRIBED "UNSCHEDULED TELEWORK"
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Qualifications

Military Grades:E-7 through E-9 or O-1 through O-4

Compatible Military Assignments: Officer: 46A, 46X 35XX Enlisted: 46Q, 46Z 3NXXX

GENERAL EXPERIENCE : Experience, education or training in administrative, professional, investigative and/or technical work. Experience evaluating information and/or using analytical skills to disseminate effective communication. Experience in compiling reports, letters, memoranda, etc., and required person-to-person contacts to convey information. Experience using computers and automation systems.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : Must have 1-year equivalent to at least next lower grade level. Experience, education, or training involving knowledge of writing, communication principles, methods and techniques that relate to the public affairs of an agency. Experience in applying and adapting knowledge of strictly controlled situations of an agency. Experience writing articles on routine events of non-controversial subjects. Experience responding timely and appropriately to requests for information concerning agency programs and services. Experience participating in meetings with specialized groups to listen to and understand feedback on agency programs that are of particular interest to public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties are performed in an office setting, in news conferences, briefings, meetings, etc. The incumbent may travel occasionally to perform UPAR assistance visits and/or inspections. However, there are no special physical demands involved in performing the work of the position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The position's operating environment involves everyday risks or discomforts associated with a climate controlled office or equivalent setting.
