Overview
We are seeking a Secret‑cleared Middleware Architect to support the modernization and replacement of legacy middleware systems supporting mission‑critical platforms. This role is fully onsite in Manassas, VA and focuses on refactoring legacy middleware into modern, scalable, open‑architecture solutions using contemporary communication frameworks and containerized build environments.
The ideal candidate has deep hands‑on experience with Java and C/C++, Linux‑based development, distributed systems, and modern Pub/Sub communication patterns.
Key Responsibilities
Lead legacy middleware replacement efforts, including analysis, refactoring, and modernization of existing middleware components
Develop and integrate middleware solutions using Java and C/C++ within a Linux OS environment
Perform Linux socket programming and low‑level network programming to support high‑performance distributed systems
Refactor monolithic middleware using modern open technologies such as:
gRPC
Google Protocol Buffers
DDS (Data Distribution Service) or similar middleware technologies
Design and implement Pub/Sub communication patterns to enable scalable, decoupled system architectures
Apply object‑oriented and enterprise design patterns in Java and C++ to ensure maintainable, extensible middleware solutions
Support containerized development and deployment using container technologies and modern build infrastructure
Utilize and maintain build systems such as Gradle and CMake for compilation, dependency management, and CI integration
Collaborate closely with systems, networking, and software teams to ensure seamless integration and performance optimization
Required Qualifications
Active Secret security clearance
Strong experience in Java and C/C++ software development
Hands‑on experience developing middleware in Linux environments
Experience with socket programming and network‑based applications
Familiarity with modern middleware technologies (gRPC, Protobuf, DDS, or similar)
Experience designing systems using Pub/Sub architectures
Experience with containerized environments and modern build pipelines
Ability to work 100% onsite in Manassas, VA
Preferred Qualifications
Experience modernizing legacy systems within government or defense environments
Strong understanding of distributed systems and performance optimization
Experience supporting mission‑critical, security‑focused systems
Familiarity with DevSecOps or CI/CD integration concepts
