Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes1) Experience in firefighting and fire prevention techniques. 2) Planning and implementation of fire protection and prevention training programs. 3) Conducting inspections of facilities/buildings and safety alarms or systems to ensure code compliance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Selective Placement Factors: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the following certificates certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M upon entry into this position.

Additional information
- Functions as senior staff officer on duty and responds to emergency incidents and assumes immediate control until relieved by the next ranking supervisor.
- Instructs department personnel in all phases of fire protection and prevention techniques.
- Practices and gives tests as required to determine the level of knowledge retained by personnel.
- Establishes and maintains training records and files and periodically checks company training for completeness and compliance.
- Responsible for developing, updating and conducting the overall training program for the organization and Fire Prevention and Public Education Programs.
- Plans, organizes, participates, oversees and reviews training drills and exercises in structural, ARFF, Haz-Mat and Rescue functions as required and needed.
- Analyses information from incidents, drills and training exercises in order to refine, expand and stress areas of emphasis.
- Coordinates and administers organizational Driver Training Program.
- Conducts periodic inspections of facilities/buildings and various fire safety systems on post in order to determine adequacy of life safety systems and initiate inspection report of deficiencies to include recommendations for corrective action.
- Serves as the division safety officer responsible for compliance with all known safety guidance.
Conditions of employment
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures while on duty.
- This position requires the employee to work a 60-hour work week/120 hours per pay period which includes one 24 hour shift and may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions and a Government License to operate vehicles.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 5% of the time.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
