Job Description

Duties

  • Investigate, research, write, and/or edit traffic engineering safety bulletins.
  • Extract data from engineering publications (such as handbooks, catalogs, reports, technical and field manuals) for use in a traffic engineering safety publication program.
  • Monitor reported progress of traffic engineering studies to ensure valid reporting by contractors.
  • Direct and/or conduct transportation engineering studies related to traffic engineering and/or traffic engineering safety seminars.
  • Conduct installation site visits to gather preliminary information on traffic (vehicle/pedestrian based) field surveys and/or studies.
  • Recommend technical approach to collecting and/or compiling vehicle/pedestrian traffic-related statistical data.
  • Management of traffic engineering equipment to include directing the field use in surveys and/or monitoring.
  • Compile and/or review engineering field data to establish baseline conditions and/or develop recommendations.
  • Coordinate with others to plan work efforts.
  • Draft and/or publish traffic (vehicle/pedestrian based) engineering reports and/or traffic engineering/safety publications.
  • Present complex engineering material in a classroom and/or briefing environment.
  • Brief installation and/or command level staff on recommendations and/or finding of field surveys.
Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Interpreting transportation engineering plans, studies, and/or specifications; 2) Applying transportation engineering principles to take corrective action on technical problems; and 3) Presenting technical data in order to defend or negotiate a program's results. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
