JOB SUMMARY

The Counter-UAS Operations Unit's mission is to deploy and manage Counter-UAS training and technologies in support of the FBI's mission, and execute the National Counter-UAS Training Center. CUOU overseas all FBI aerial drone detection and mitigation operations, coordinates the National Counter-UAS Training Center, delivering advanced operation training and certification for law enforcement partners. CUOU also oversees Counter-UAS related research, training, testing, and evaluation activities.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance
  • Some travel required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires some strenuous physical exertion such as climbing tall ladders or towers, lifting heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds, and crouching or crawling in small work areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Spends time in work situations which exposes the incumbent to potentially hazardous situations. These include electrical shocks, falls from high towers, extreme weather conditions (rain, snow, ice, or high winds), and similar situations. Safety precautions are required, including accompaniment by a Special Agent or another technician when performing duties considered hazardous to life and limb and utilization of safety procedures while on high towers. Adheres to safety precautions at all times and wear protective clothing and gear. Must work under conditions of extreme stress and tension as a result of need to maintain equipment in optimum working condition.

MAJOR DUTIES:

GS-12
  • Deploys nationwide in support of Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) missions at special events and investigative case operations.
  • Participates in repairing specialized electronic equipment and taking corrective maintenance actions within the assigned programmatic area.
  • Routinely inspects and tests equipment/systems to ensure that technical integrity is maintained and if necessary, proposes appropriate corrective action to ensure equipment is fully operational and available for rapid deployment nationwide.
  • Operates, configures, maintains, transports, and troubleshoots C-UAS equipment and software. This includes highly specialized radio and computer equipment, with a focus on IP-based systems.

In addition to the above duties at the GS-12 level:

  • Participates in research, development, testing, and evaluation activities with C-UAS equipment and software, often in coordination with interagency and DOD partners.
  • Provides one-on-one instruction or in a structured classroom environment to both internal and external partners concerning the uses of electronics and C-UAS related technologies in a variety of situations.
  • Reviews pertinent technical manuals to remain current with technology.

Specialized Experience (SE)

GS-12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Experience in electronic technology engineering concepts and skills to adapt, troubleshoot, or modify equipment to meet Bureau's operational needs and resolve technical problems.
  • Communicating effectively with officials and peers both orally and in writing to perform assignments and to provide training to others.
  • Designing, production, maintenance, testing, and evaluation of secure communications support and investigative equipment in the Bureau's critical operational areas, including major crisis situations and special operations.
  • Communicating with technical and investigative personnel; entities within the law enforcement community; public utility companies; communications/networking community; hardware, electrical and electronic suppliers and equipment manufacturer's representatives.

In addition to the above

GS-13: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Experience with telecommunications and electronics principles and practices to perform full range of duties in electronic surveillance between tempest and intrusion detection; electronic communications systems such as wireless networks; local area networks; wide area networks and electronic security.
  • Establishing liaison with other law enforcement entities, state and local authorities and technical representatives during normal and crisis response situations.

Desired Skills

Desired skills are NOT mandatory and will NOT be utilized to minimally qualify applicants. Desired Skills are:
  • Computer networking skills and experience
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certificate
  • MANET radio experience
  • Electronic warfare experience
  • ATAK/WinTAK experience
