Job Overview
The Senior Network Engineer for Europe supports the Department of Defense (DoD) medical mission by leading the design, implementation, security, and operational support of highly complex LAN/WLAN/WAN environments across Defense Health Agency (DHA) networked facilities in the European region. This role serves as the regional technical authority for network infrastructure, performance, security, and standards compliance.
Key Responsibilities
• Serve as the regional point of contact for LAN/WLAN/WAN network issues, configuration management, addressing, routing, and interconnection
• Design, install, configure, document, manage, and troubleshoot enterprise LAN/WLAN/WAN infrastructure supporting DHA medical facilities
• Resolve complex network and routing issues across all layers of the OSI model using advanced diagnostic and network management tools
• Utilize tools such as SolarWinds Orion, ARMIS, Ansible, MRTG, and MIBs to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime
• Lead and coordinate with Network Specialists, government staff, vendors, and other contractors to resolve enterprise-level network issues
• Architect and maintain network security controls, including firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and LAN/WAN boundary protection systems
• Provide written technical recommendations, standards updates, and configuration changes through tickets, documentation, and coordination with the NetMOD Network Standards Team
• Evaluate vendor products and recommend solutions aligned with DoD, DHA, and European Regional Command requirements
• Develop, implement, and enforce LAN/WLAN/WAN policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance and standardization
• Communicate network status, risks, and resolutions clearly to government stakeholders and key customers
• Participate in additional projects and initiatives as operational needs arise
MUST HAVES
• DoD 8570.01 compliance required
• IAM Level III (or equivalent) certification (per DoD 8570.01-M)
• CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional)
• CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional)
• Ability to perform duties of subordinate network roles when deployed to covered sites
• Expert-level knowledge of enterprise networking protocols and technologies, including: TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, SMTP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, RSTP, VRRP, BIND, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, PPP, HDLC
• Strong understanding of IEEE standards including: 802.1d/q/w, 802.3, 802.11, 802.3u, 802.3z, and related Ethernet/WLAN standards
• Hands-on experience with routed, switched, and shared LAN/WAN environments
• Experience supporting Microsoft OS, Windows Active Directory, UNIX, and OpenVMS environments
• Familiarity with synchronous/asynchronous communications, Ethernet, Fast/Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, ATM
• Experience using OTDRs, cable testers, network sniffers, and EIA/TIA cabling standards
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field and 5+ years of directly related experience
OR
• Technical/Vocational certification and 10+ years of progressively complex network engineering experience
PLUSSES:
• Experience supporting DoD Health Care Information Systems
• Strong expertise in Cisco networking, Windows-based environments, and SolarWinds
• Experience with Zero Trust architectures and methodologies (preferred)
