Job Description

Duties

As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) LEADER, WL-3806-10, you will lead three or more workers to accomplish trades and/or labor work on a substantially full time and continuing basis. Leader is responsible to both perform the work assigned by a supervisor and ensures that subordinates completed assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards. The organizational location of this position is Aviation Classification Repair Activity Depot (AVCRAD).

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, and starts work (e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led). Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.

2. Sees to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in work crew busy. Checks work in progress and when finished, checks for compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Urges or advises other employees to follow supervisor's instructions and to meet deadlines; demonstrates proper work methods. Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (e.g., technical orders); obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that come up during the work.

3. Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems (e.g., additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). Ensures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (e.g., ensures that machine capacities are not exceeded and that tools are properly used).

4. Works along with other sheet metal workers, setting the pace. Works directly on the aircraft and its components, fulfilling such tasks as removal, repair, modification and installation of parts and assemblies. Identifies metal corrosion. Removes corrosion by mechanical and chemical procedures. Treats metal with chemical procedures, such as acids and caustics for passivation and etching, to protect metal from oxidation. Performs such functions as pickling of metals to prepare for good bonding with primer coat of protective materials. Applies protective coatings, markings, and decals after proper removal of corrosion and treatment of metals. Operates and maintains aircraft paint booths in accordance with applicable manuals and directives. Operates and maintains stencil and decal equipment.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS :

Military Grades: E5-E7

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

MILITARY MEMBERS WITH BONUSES: Upon acceptance of a military technician position military members who are currently receiving a military Reenlistment/Extension Bonus (REB) or GI Bill-SR Kicker may lose incentive eligibility and may be subject to termination or suspension of incentive (includes indefinite and temporary technicians on assignment for more than 180 days in any continuous 12-month period).

GENERAL EXPERIENCE : Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidates ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : Must have 24 months of experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams. Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment. Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys. Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments.In addition to the journeyman level knowledge, experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related the repair function of this occupational series. Must have the ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment. The ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.
