Overview
Insight Global is seeking a Junior Data Engineer to support a long‑term Department of Defense program for NAVWAR under the Defense Health Readiness Engineering Services (DHRES) contract. This role supports the Strategic Management Deployment System (SMDS)—a mission‑critical system developed for the U.S. Marine Corps to plan, manage, and execute global deployments, training exercises, and operational activities.
SMDS replaced multiple legacy Marine Corps systems and officially deployed in October 2025. With a recently awarded recompete, this program has at least 5 years of runway, continued feature development, and strong long‑term stability.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early‑career engineer looking to grow on a high‑impact, cleared DoD program with mentorship, modern tooling, and a clear path to full‑time conversion.
What the System Does (High Level)
SMDS serves as a centralized planning and logistics platform that allows the Marine Corps to:
Consolidate personnel and location data from systems around the world
Plan deployments, training events, and operational missions
Identify who is deploying, where, and for what purpose
Support force‑deployment planning and readiness operations
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and enhance new application features with a strong focus on SQL‑based data solutions
Maintain existing code and resolve bugs or performance issues
Write clean, secure, maintainable, and well‑tested code following best practices
Develop technical documentation, specifications, and supporting artifacts
Collaborate closely with engineers, DBAs, and project leadership to clarify requirements and design solutions
Analyze and optimize existing code to improve performance and scalability
Participate in Agile development activities including sprint planning, demos, and retrospectives
Assist with troubleshooting, testing, and validating new features and fixes
Required Qualifications
1–5 years of professional software development or data engineering experience
Eligibility to obtain a DoD Secret clearance
Completed (or actively pursuing) a STEM‑related degree
Strong experience writing SQL queries from scratch in support of application or feature development
Working experience with one or more of the following:
SQL
Java
Python
JavaScript or TypeScript
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo)
Experience with PostgreSQL, Git, or jOOQ
Exposure to DevOps or DevSecOps concepts
Experience working with Java application servers
Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies
Active Secret clearance
Work Schedule & Interview Process
Hybrid Schedule: 3 days onsite in the North Charleston office, 2 days remote
Core Hours: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Interview Process:
One round interview (1‑hour technical panel)
Interview with team lead, DBA, and program leadership
No coding exercise—technical discussion only
