The Lab Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing multiple Test and Assembly Laboratory facilities. This role requires a strong understanding of test planning and execution, assembly procedure development, laboratory operations, and people management. The Supervisor is accountable for building, developing, and leading a team of technicians while promoting continuous process improvement and ensuring training and compliance requirements are met across all supervised lab facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain procedures with the Calibration Lab to ensure all laboratory equipment remains current with calibration requirements.
- Coordinate the transfer of equipment between laboratory work areas and the Calibration Lab.
- Escort Calibration Lab personnel for on-site calibration activities and ESD bench certifications.
- Develop and execute plans for routine maintenance and audits of laboratory spaces, ensuring all property is properly tagged and documented.
- Support internal audits throughout the year and sponsor audits on an annual basis.
- Assess and support improvements to the inventory management system for tracking raw materials, electronic components, chemicals, limited-life materials, and consumables.
- Verify and coordinate required training for new staff and implement and maintain organizational training records.
- Ensure laboratory cleanliness, sanitization, and compliance with safety standards.
- Coordinate and escort custodial services as required.
- Support planning and execution for inventory control, facility utilization and scheduling, workforce scheduling, conflict resolution, priority rescheduling, and general planning and expediting activities.
Additional Responsibilities
- Supervise union technicians supporting lab operations, including daily work assignment scheduling and annual performance evaluations.
- Maintain laboratory data sources, including inventory of test cells, locations, configurations, capabilities, user manuals, drawings, tabletop layouts, and maintenance schedules (calibration, cryogenic refills, compressed air, and similar services).
- Coordinate across programs to maximize laboratory efficiency while meeting customer milestones.
- Oversee facility surveillance, including test cell utilization data collection and failure rate analysis.
- Develop and manage sparing plans and obsolescence tracking, including identification of critical parts, minimum on-hand quantities, capital expenditure planning, and inventory tracking.
- Plan and coordinate preventative maintenance performed by internal teams and external vendors.
- Support acquisition, upgrades, and repairs of test cells, including requirements development, facility planning, vendor quotations, procurement coordination, installation, acceptance, and recertification.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for test cell issues and develop corrective action plans.
- Maintain a five-year facilities plan, including research, approval, purchase, and installation of capital equipment.
- Work closely with external vendors for material purchases and coordination of overflow work.
- Provide on-site support 4-5 days per week in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Business or a related field.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in laboratory or facility operations management or a related role, including supervisory experience.
- Strong attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills with facility users and program leadership.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to solve complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to adapt plans and priorities to changing customer and program needs.
- Familiarity with Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems.
- Familiarity with scenario planning methodologies.
