Position Overview:
STi is seeking a Senior Research Engineer/Analyst – Threat & Operating Environment to serve as the primary lead for SOCAFRICA’s environmental and strategic threat analysis work. This role owns the recurring analytic cadence associated with the annual strategic estimate, bimonthly spotlight reports, quarterly deep dives, and forecast-oriented threat network analysis. The ideal candidate can move from open-source and Government-furnished data to executive-readable threat assessments that identify key nodes, drivers, vulnerabilities, forecast trends, and actionable mitigation options. This role maps principally to threat network assessment, driver analysis, 60–90 day forecasting, explicit assumptions/confidence handling, and recommendations suitable for commander decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:
• Produce or co-produce recurring Spotlight Reports and Deep Dive Reports, including short-form executive products and longer analytical annexes.
• Analyze threat actors, threat assets, threat networks, vulnerabilities, drivers, and environmental trends affecting SOCAFRICA operations and future planning.
• Assess political, military, social, economic, informational, environmental, and technological factors that shape the operating environment and affect SOF survivability, interoperability, and mission effectiveness.
• Develop most likely / most dangerous trend outlooks, explicitly document assumptions, confidence levels, information gaps, and analytic limitations, and identify trigger conditions for rapid updates.
• Translate complex threat and operating-environment findings into clear courses of action, planning implications, and mitigation options for SOCAFRICA leadership.
• Coordinate with assessment analysts, partner assessment analysts, and the integration/data-visualization role to incorporate structured data, visual products, and cross-task findings into final reports and briefs.
• Support annual STI relevance/gap analysis and final technical reporting by documenting sources used, methodological limitations, and research gaps encountered during performance.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in intelligence studies, political science, international relations, African studies, security studies, military history, data analytics, engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in intelligence analysis, strategic threat analysis, operational environment analysis, or comparable defense analytic work.
• Demonstrated experience producing forecast-oriented written analysis for senior military or national security audiences.
• Demonstrated experience conducting network analysis, driver analysis, trend analysis, and vulnerability analysis using incomplete and mixed-source data.
• Ability to develop concise executive summaries as well as longer analytical products with clear sourcing, confidence statements, assumptions, and limitations.
• Active TS/SCI clearance and ability to operate in classified and compartmented environments.
• Strong writing skills, including the ability to produce short decision papers, 3–5 page focused analyses, and 10–12 page deep-dive assessments on recurring deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior support to SOF, AFRICOM, USSOCOM, counter-VEO, illicit finance, transnational threat, or partner-force mission sets.
• Experience working with Palantir, TRESTLE, Analytic Development Environment tools, structured indicator datasets, or Government systems of record.
• Familiarity with open-source research tradecraft, structured analytic techniques, and evidence-to-judgment writing.
• Master’s degree in a relevant field.
