Duties

As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER (TITLE 32), WL-5801-10, you will serve as a working leader of three or more Surface Maintenance Mechanics, WG-5801-10.

Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:
  • Assign work orders to specific crewmembers and select workers for various jobs on the basis of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Pass on to workers instructions received from the supervisor, demonstrates proper work methods, and starts work.
  • Insure that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
  • Assure that there is enough work to keep the work crew busy.
  • Troubleshoot, perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles.
  • Make repairs to assemblies and components such as voltage regulators, generators/alternators, brake cylinders, etc.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or uses test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and computer diagnostic tools.
  • Utilize embedded diagnostics in equipment and a wide variety of original equipment manufacturer system analyzers in order to determine the exact nature or extent of repair.
  • Determine what adjustments may be necessary to complete work orders, and whether any additional repairs other than those specified or indicated on the work order are necessary.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade listed in the announcement. This is required prior to the effective date of placement. If you are not sure you are eligible for military membership, please contact a National Guard recruiter prior to applying for this position.

  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • IAW The Fair Chance Act, Agency employees may not request criminal history information at the point of initial application, upon receipt of an application, or prior to, during or after a job interview. If an Optional Form (OF) 306, Declaration of Employment is submitted prior to the point of a conditional offer, questions related to background information section may not be asked.
  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of considerations for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), the only area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.

Military Grades: Enlisted/Warrant Officer - E5-CW2

GENERAL EXPERIENCE : MUST possess experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and can use common tools and equipment in the line of work.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : WL-10 Level MUST possess, in addition to the journeyman level knowledge, experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related the repair function of this occupational series; ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment; ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
