Linguist
University of Maryland, MD (On/Off-Site)

The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland advances cutting-edge research and applied technology solutions in support of national security missions. Within the OI2 division, this position will play a critical role in advancing computational language technologies that support intelligence analysis, dual-use technology assessment, and multidisciplinary scientific research initiatives.

The Cleared Computational Linguist will design, develop, and validate advanced natural language processing methodologies to extract, analyze, and operationalize insight from complex intelligence text, multilingual corpora, and structured and unstructured data sources. Working in collaboration with data scientists, foreign language experts, subject matter experts in life sciences and physics, and applied research teams, the incumbent will contribute to mission-critical efforts including automated narrative tracking, intelligence text analytics, and the development of software tools that support language-based threat assessment and medical/intelligence record analysis.

This role requires deep expertise in computational linguistics, AI/ML techniques including large language models, and applied Python-based development in secure environments. The position supports both research innovation and operational transition, ensuring that novel language technologies are rigorously validated, scalable, and aligned with Department of Defense and Intelligence Community priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s or doctoral degree in computational linguistics or linguistics, computer science with a focus on language technologies, or related analytic discipline.
• Background in and demonstrated proficiency with computational linguistics/natural language processing (NLP), such as through the application of NLP to problems in candidate’s area of expertise.
• Experience utilizing AI/ML tools (including LLMs) and supporting technologies relevant to the enrichment and analysis of text data, such those used in RAG pipelines, NER, sentiment analysis, general semantic search, etc. Experience training and/or tuning models preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of Python for all-purpose use/application to a variety of problems (comfort with all commonly used aspects of the language, with general scripting, data science, task automation, data collection, etc.), plus demonstrated evidence of 1+ years of regular use for professional/research purposes involving NLP. 5+ years of regular use for professional/research purposes preferred.
• Experience with Python packages commonly used for AI/ML, text parsing/processing, data collection, and data science preferred (e.g., Pandas, Numpy, BeautifulSoup or other XML/HTML parsers, experience with web requests/scripted API utilization, scikit-learn, spaCy, transformers, pytorch, and/or similar)
• Experience leading applied research projects.

Preferred technical qualifications:
- Foreign language capabilities, at the advanced level.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams.
