Duties
This position is located in the USPFO. The purpose of this position is to serve as a Small Shop Chief(SSC) with the responsibility for the overall operations of a small shop. The position oversees anddirects works of one or more Motor Vehicle Operators, WG-5703, who are assigned to the shop. Theincumbent performs the full range of non-supervisory work of the shop.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Serves as a Small Shop Chief performing all of the following tasks:
a. Plans and lays out work to be accomplished in the shop which is then completed by the individualand lower graded worker(s).
b. Possesses the knowledge and skills found at the journeyman level as well as those required forplanning, accomplishing and maintaining a functional shop maintenance program.
c. Independently determines appropriate maintenance procedures such as how and when the workshould be accomplished. Estimates manpower, equipment and material requirements.
d. Devises and maintains all program plans and records, is skilled in surveillance andtroubleshooting techniques, and is able to determine maintenance/repair procedures neededwithout benefit of technical supervisory guidance.
e. Plans, organizes and directs shop maintenance programs/procedures under general supervision.
f. Determines approaches, methods and courses of action required to accomplish the mission of theshop in an effective and efficient manner.
g. May provide recommendations and input to the supervisor concerning personnel actions such asperformance appraisals, awards, position description changes, disciplinary actions, leave, etc.
Performs the same type and level of work as performed within the unit.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE :
Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to follow instructions and safely operate the type of equipment required to accomplish the duties of the position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE :
Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to operate and perform operator maintenance on straight-in-line trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 pounds. Experience demonstrating ability to operate truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers and motor coaches. Experience operating vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways, narrow country roads, and on steep winding grades. Experience driving vehicles without mishap in complicated traffic situations.
Education
There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

- This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
- Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
- Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
- Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
- May be required to successfully complete a trial period.
- Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

- Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate clearance designated at the State through the use of the Position Designation Tool.
- The work may require the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle; if so, and an appropriate valid driver's license is mandatory. Must have operator maintenance ability for all types of equipment.
- Currency on all types of loading equipment (forklifts, cranes, winch systems). Currency on out-state tractor/trailer height/weight requirements an on HAZMAT and OSHA requirements.
- This is a National Guard dual status technician position which requires military membership.
- Upon accepting this position, the employee may be required to serve up to a two-year probationary period.
