Data Migration Engineer (TS/SCI w/ Polygraph)
Location: Reston, VA or Charlottesville, VA
Schedule: Onsite | Monday–Friday
Compensation: $67/hr – $101/hr (based on experience)
Insight Global is seeking an experienced Data Migration Engineer to support a large federal government client on a high-impact modernization effort. This role focuses on migrating legacy data systems to a modern platform, ensuring data integrity, accessibility, and performance while directly supporting mission-critical operations.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in database engineering, legacy system migration, and cloud-based data solutions, with the ability to work closely with both technical teams and government stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Assess, inventory, and analyze legacy data stored across shared folders and drives
Evaluate data quality, completeness, and relevance for migration
Identify and document data dependencies, redundancies, and inconsistencies
Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data structures, relationships, and required formats
Develop and execute comprehensive data migration plans, including timelines and resource needs
Interpret legacy APIs and define data mappings between source and target systems
Identify migration risks and propose mitigation strategies
Implement indexing strategies to ensure efficient data access and retrieval
Validate migrated data through rigorous testing to ensure accuracy and completeness
Produce validation reports and resolve discrepancies with stakeholders
Partner with software engineers, database administrators, and development teams to ensure architectural alignment
Create and maintain technical documentation for migration processes and system configurations
Generate status reports on migration progress, data quality metrics, and issue resolution
Develop user guides and training materials to support adoption of the new platform
Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or related field
Proven experience as a Database Engineer or Data Migration Engineer
Hands-on experience migrating legacy systems to modern or cloud-based environments
Proficiency with ETL and data migration tools (Talend, Informatica, SSIS, or similar)
Strong experience with relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
Scripting experience for automation and data transformation (Python, SQL, PowerShell)
Solid knowledge of AWS, specifically Amazon S3 and data storage/retrieval solutions
Understanding of data indexing and data accessibility within enterprise applications
Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph (required)
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Experience with data governance, data quality standards, and compliance frameworks
Additional scripting experience (Python, Bash)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
Self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision
