We are seeking a technically focused Assistant Group Supervisor (AGS) to provide leadership for campus electrical systems, medium-voltage (MV) infrastructure, and 24/7/365 utility operations. This role emphasizes campus operational resiliency, ensuring electrical systems are planned, maintained, and operated to withstand disruptions, support mission continuity, and recover quickly from failures. You will join a highly skilled Facilities Management & Operations team committed to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement in support of APL’s mission.

Role Impact

This position is central to maintaining and improving the resilience of the campus electrical infrastructure at APL. It balances daily operational reliability with long-term planning for disruption tolerance, recovery capability, and future growth. As APL continues to electrify and deliver our mission, this role ensures the electrical backbone remains robust, adaptable, and capable of supporting operations under all conditions. The Assistant Group Supervisor ensures resilient utility operations and infrastructure stewardship. This role directly influences APL’s ability to sustain research, protect assets, and respond effectively to planned and unplanned events.

As an Assistant Group Supervisor…

Your primary responsibility will be to lead the campus medium-voltage electrical power grid and electrical maintenance programs. You will also lead all aspects of 24/7/365 utility operations, focusing on resiliency, reliability, and continuity of campus operations.
  • Lead and support the Electrical Maintenance section and the Operations team, encouraging a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Lead all aspects of the operation, maintenance, and reliability of the campus medium-voltage electrical system, substations, switchgear, and associated infrastructure.
  • Champion resilient utility operations by incorporating redundancy, risk mitigation, and recovery planning into maintenance strategies.
  • Determine of electrical power requirements and lead capacity evaluations to support current operations and long-term electrification planning.
  • Lead planning efforts for future electrical capacity needs and contribute to medium-voltage grid renovation and upgrade projects.
  • Evaluate system vulnerabilities and single points of failure and develop strategies to improve electrical system resilience and fault tolerance.
  • Coordinate outage planning, emergency response, system switching, and after-hours operational support.
  • Partner with engineering, planning, and project teams to support construction activities and long-term utility network planning.
  • Manage assigned overhead budgets and collaborate with peer supervisors to align financial planning and prioritization.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, NFPA standards, OSHA requirements, and internal safety procedures.
  • Utilize APL vehicles in the course of daily operations in this role.


Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications if you…
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, engineering technology, facilities engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Possess a background of at least 2 years in roles related to electrical infrastructure, medium-voltage, utility operations, or facilities maintenance, including supervisory or lead responsibilities.
  • Have experience performing load calculations, capacity analysis, or system modeling.
  • Are familiar with electrical codes, safety standards, and procedures for infrastructure operations.
  • Have strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Are familiar with CMMS platforms, maintenance planning, and budget management.
  • Are willing and able to support 24/7/365 operations, including emergency response and after-hours decision-making.
  • Requires valid state-of-residence driver’s license in good standing.
  • Hold U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status, as required to access APL facilities and networks, subject to applicable laws.

You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…
  • Have 7+ years of experience in medium-voltage electrical systems, utility operations, or facilities maintenance.
  • Are a Registered Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Have experience supporting campus-scale electrification initiatives, utility master planning, or major electrical infrastructure upgrades.
  • Have demonstrated success leading technical teams in a 24/7 operational environment.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
