Duties

As an AIRCRAFT FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR, GS-2181-13, you will:
  • Brief and instruct preflight preparations
  • Plan, organize, and direct the Standardization/ Evaluation function
  • Review flight publications and directives for accuracy and currency
  • Train and evaluate proficiency and competency of aircrews in weapons and tactics
  • Review, define, and update current threats and countermeasures

Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership. Areas of Consideration:
  • All permanent, on-board, Title 32 Employees within the New Jersey National Guard
Military Grades: CW3 - CW4

Federal Employment Requirements:
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service
Placement Requirements:
  • Medical physical, flight physical, medical profile, and completed/cleared drug test
  • Single scope background investigation
  • Valid state driver's license
Qualifications

General Experience:
Must have the following General Experience(s);
  • Understanding of the occupation's basic principles and concepts
  • One year on-the-job experience in the grade (or a comparable military rank)
Mandatory Qualification Requirements:
  • A Federal Aviation Administration pilot certificates or appropriate military certifications
  • Military ratings in the main-frame military aircraft of employment
Specialized Experience:
Must have 36 months of experience in the following;
  • Piloting and instructing pilot skills in one or more of the following main-frame/military aircraft;
    • Fixed-wing
    • Rotary
    • Remotely piloted aircraft
  • Training and instructing others in the piloting of a specified main-frame military aircraft
    • Supervising and/or conducting mission planning, mission preparations, filing of flight plans, and conducting crew briefings
    • Traditional "stick and rudder" type controls for piloting aircraft direction, altitude, and speed
    • Planning, scheduling, and conducting training flights through Federal Aviation Administration controlled national airspace
    • Conducting particular missions and flying specific main-frame aircraft in combat tactics
      • Flying in mountainous terrain
      • Performing tactical remote site evaluations
      • Performing landings on remote sites
      • Provide ground and flight training
      • Conducting night-vision operations or instructions
Must have two (2) years of experience in one of the following programs:
  • Civilian aviation program
  • Military service aviation program (active duty or reserve components)
  • Army National Guard Aviation Support facility
  • Air National Guard Wing/ Operations Group
Required Flight Hours:
  • 500 hours total military fixed wing flying time
Education

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university
  • A Graduate Degree from an accredited civilian academic college or from an equivalent professional military education school is optimum
  • Federal Aviation Administration certifications awarded from an accredited civilian aviation program or aviation certification from accredited military aviation school.
