Duties

  • You will be responsible for the operation of system interface computer equipment.
  • You will acknowledge or defer alarms, determine the priority level of each alarm generated, determine the operational procedures for the alarm and act in accordance with procedures for the Fire Detection and Intrusion Detection System.
  • You will transfer caller to proper personnel as determined or dispatches a variety of emergency equipment to include police, fire, ambulance, rescue or hazardous materials units.
  • You will maintain continuous telephone contact with caller, when appropriate, during emergency situations.
  • You will be responsible for caller interrogation to determine the problem and the nature of the call.
  • You will Identify the nature of emergency, level of response required based on local protocols, and provide any additional information to the responding units.
  • You will perform crisis intervention with distraught emergency callers during high-risk situations until appropriate emergency field units arrive on scene.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Within 16 weeks from the date of employment, you will be required to demonstrate reasonable proficiency at locally established training guidelines on the use of E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment.
  • Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate, rotating work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
  • Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear a uniform.
  • Incumbent must be a qualified typist. (40 wpm).
  • Incumbent must pass a pre-employment; fingerprint based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain certification in: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Emergency Medical Dispatch based on the program standards at the location assigned.
  • Incumbent must complete the Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on the program standards at the location assigned.
  • Incumbent must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on assigned location.
  • Incumbent must complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100, 200, 700, and 144 courses.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training that is offered locally and pass in accordance with predetermined course requirements.
  • Pre-employment vision and hearing screenings are required.
  • Occasional travel may be required to attend trainings, conferences, or meetings.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in operating automation, emergency dispatching, and communications equipment, crisis intervention skills, interrogation skills to determine problems and best course of action to be taken, computer systems and software, knowledge of fire suppression systems, fire alarm detection equipment, facilities; medical dispatching assistance for initiating immediate and appropriate emergency response; knowledge of law enforcement and fire service terminology, techniques, procedures, equipment, apparatus, and operations rescue. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
