Duties

  • Provide control and separation of air traffic for National Training Center and Fort Irwin Restricted Areas (R-2502N/E/A).
  • Issue Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) assigned transponder codes for tracking aircraft, issues altitude and direction to be flown as necessary to integrate aircraft into areas ground units are firing through.
  • Assist pilots planning flights and file flight plans and maintain, verify and post Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs).
  • Act as Shift Leader (SL) or Controller in Charge (CIC) on a rotating basis.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
  • If you are an applicant not currently occupying a GS-2152 covered position, you will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment Class IV flight physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Must be able to maintain personal physical fitness in accordance with AR 40-501.
  • This position is subject to periodic and random urinalysis drug testing.
  • This position will support the Facility Training Program and be involved with one-on-one, on-the-job-training.
  • Temporary Duty travel (TDY) away from primary duty station may be required (up to 10% of the time).
  • Incumbent may be required to work overtime to complete the mission.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the Control Tower Operator exam with a passing score, either with the Federal Aviation Administration or the Military Service.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized experience: Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service which includes the following. Provide control and separation of air traffic also controls the arriving and departing aircraft by means of radar and two-way radio communications. Issues Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) assigned transponder codes for tracking aircraft, issues altitude and direction to be flown as necessary to keep aircraft in designated areas. Assist pilots planning flights and filing flight plans.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09)
