AGS is looking for a Captain to work in El Paso, TX. The Shift Commander or Captain is responsible for supervising detention staff to ensure the safety and security of detainees in custody, acting in accordance with the highest ethical standards at all times, and ensuring a spirit of fairness and integrity in the on-going execution of their duties. A Shift Commander is responsible for supervising staff and maintaining security and order within the facility during their assigned shift. This includes managing personnel, responding to emergencies, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, and overseeing detainee activities. They act as a first-line manager, directing and evaluating staff, and are often the point person for critical incidents and emergencies. To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today!

Responsibilities

Captain duties shall include but are not limited to:
  • Serves as the detention primary point of contact during their shift.
  • Directs and evaluates the work of subordinate detention staff.
  • Provides direct supervision to the contract Lieutenants and monitors their performance against performance objectives.
  • Ensures staff are properly trained and follow established procedures.
  • Assigns tasks, sets priorities, and manages staff schedules.
  • Conducts inspections, shakedowns, and detainee searches.
  • Monitors all facility activities to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • May participate in disciplinary hearings and grievance procedures.
  • Ensures the security of the detention facility, staff, and detainees.
  • Responds to emergencies, such as escapes, fights/disturbances, or medical emergencies.
  • Directs emergency responses, including those involving the Disturbance Control Team (DCT).
  • Monitors equipment and security systems.
  • Enforces rules and regulations and maintains order.
  • Responsible for assuring consistent delivery of service regardless of shift or location, for taking immediate action to correct problems detected and for responding whenever called upon
  • Hands on monitoring of shift activities to ensure there is no officer clustering, standing around, or on inactive posts - officers are utilized across the campus to fill all operational needs
  • Creates cross-functional training for all posts to ensure officers are qualified to work on multiple posts.
  • Coaches staff on verbal judo/de-escalation techniques to ensure minimal uses of force
  • Ensures all incidents are appropriately documented and officer reports are reviewed for accuracy, grammar, and spelling prior to being submitted with final incident packages.
  • Oversight of staffing to ensure any open posts are filled with reserve or stand-by personnel. and managing "call-offs" due to illness or other reasons.
  • Manages the daily shift briefing for their assigned shift. Briefs Detention Officers during post checks regarding any changes in Post Orders, or any unusual or emergency situations.
  • Identifies and communicate on-the-job training to correct deficiencies in Detention Officer. performance, or to strengthen and refresh Detention Officer knowledge of critical skills and issues.
  • Reports any emergency to the prime contractor and AGS management.
  • Document incidents with complete and accurate reports.
  • Oversee the review the sign-in/out sheets to ensure proper timekeeping by Detention Officers.
  • Oversees the break schedules and ensuring that all Detention Officers receive breaks and proper relief.
  • Provides oversight and management and direct reporting of detainee counts.
  • Assists Detention Officers in dealing with any incident of disturbance or lack of cooperation from a detainee.
  • Inspects every area of the facility where detainees are present, at least once per shift.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in a related field such as Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice; or Business. The degree requirement may be satisfied by completion of a career development program that includes work-related experience, training, or college credits at a level of achievement equivalent to the bachelor's degree.
  • Must have strong leadership ability, sound judgment, and effective administrative ability.
  • Must have strong analytical skills for resolving complex cross functional problems.
  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience as a detention operations supervisor or combination of a bachelor's degree and detention operations supervisory experience totaling 6 years.
  • Shall possess in depth knowledge of ICE/ERO detention program objectives, policies, procedures, and requirements for managing a secure detention facility.
  • Shall have in depth working knowledge of ICE National Detention Standards.
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communications skills with all levels of management and interfaces with ICE Personnel.
  • Ability to review and correct officer reports for spelling/grammar prior to submitting with investigation packages.
  • Ability to prepare reports and other documents for internal and external use.
  • Willing and able to work any shift (including overnight) and any day (including holidays and weekends).
  • Able to pass the ICE National Agency Check, Person of Public Trust.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
