The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. We are seeking a Branch Chief Scientist to provide thought leadership to the Distributed Command and Control Branch, with a significant focus on developing transformational command and control, cultivating challenging and rewarding command and control work within the Air & Missile Defense mission areas and driving the branch and sector technical direction.
As a Branch Chief Scientist, you will...
- Drive the Future - Be a thought leader for new science and technology initiatives for the Distributed Command and Control Branch in areas such as operationalizing artificial intelligence, distributed decision making and building warfighter and sponsor trust in complex algorithms. Lead and contribute to technical efforts, work with AMDS program management to engage sponsors (both S&T and acquisition), define the work packages and work with group supervisors to staff the work.
- Maintain Branch Technical Excellence - Provide technical thought leadership for key projects. Participate in technical reviews at key program milestones. Maintain knowledge of the state-of-the-art in command and control and underlying technologies. Collaborate with technical experts in the other AMDS branches and mission areas to keep the sector at the state of the art.
- Staff development - Mentor staff in the development of scientific and engineering proposals and in acting as effective principal investigators.
- IRAD - Work with branch leadership to continually improve the quality of IRAD, AMD Innovation Initiative and Project Catalyst proposals by defining, refining and executing a process consistent with the calls for proposals and the selection practices. Represent the A3 branch in the AMDS IRAD selection process.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- A BS in electrical engineering, physics, math, computer science, or a related discipline
- 10+ years of professional experience.
- Experience with developing and executing work with the S&T community
- Experience interacting with and developing trusted relationships with both acquisition and S&T sponsors
- Technical experience in command and control or and combat systems
- Effective mentoring skills.
- Experience building and leading technical teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in challenging environments
- Hold an active Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
- Have an advanced degree in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics or a related discipline.
- Deep knowledge in one or more of the following areas: operationalizing artificial intelligence, distributed decision making or building warfighter and sponsor trust in complex algorithms; and a record of external engagement in these areas.
- Knowledge of the AMD programs, sponsors, and current/future challenges including threats and warfighting scenarios.
- An active Top Secret clearance
