Summary:

The Hazardous Material Specialist is responsible for overseeing the identification, handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials in support of the ECMM contract. This role ensures full compliance with federal, state, local, and contract-specific environmental, health, and safety regulations. The Hazardous Material Specialist conducts inspections, maintains inventories, provides technical expertise, and supports safe work practices to minimize risks and protect personnel, facilities, and the environment.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:
  • Identify, pack, and label all Hazardous material for transportation in compliance with IATA, DOT, and Mil Air.
  • Conduct routine inspections of hazardous material storage areas, waste accumulation points, and work sites.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, ISO, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and update hazardous material inventories, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and associated documentation.
  • Oversee hazardous waste management, including waste characterization, packaging, manifesting, and coordination with approved disposal vendors.
  • Investigate hazardous material spills, releases, or incidents and support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Provide training and guidance to personnel on hazardous material handling, spill response, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and manage spill response equipment, PPE, and emergency material stock.
  • Assist with environmental assessments, audits, and reporting in support of contract requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with program leadership, safety personnel, engineering teams, and government stakeholders to support safe operations.
  • Support the development and implementation of hazardous material policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Prepare reports, metrics, and documentation relating to waste generation, disposal activities, and environmental compliance.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Waste Management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Department of Transportation (49 CFR), International Air Transport Association (IATA DGR) and Military Air (AFMAN 24-204) Regulations.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills that result in clear, concise, and positive communications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of field operations, company specific policies and procedures, federal and contract regulations.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated strong analysis and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience as Hazardous Material Specialist or similar role
  • IATA Dangerous Goods certification
  • DOT Hazardous Materials certification
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Clearance: public trust with the ability to obtain secret
