The Opportunity:
The Departure from Specification (DFS) Coordinator is a critical position within the Engineering and Planning Department in Yokosuka, Japan. This role requires a seasoned professional with deep technical expertise and leadership capabilities. The DFS Coordinator will manage the DFS process with a high degree of autonomy, ensuring that all DFS tasks are adjudicated promptly and meet rigorous technical standards. This role involves strategic planning, mentoring a multinational team of engineers, and driving continuous improvement in the execution of the DFS process.
Responsibilities:
• Oversee and manage the DFS adjudication process with minimal oversight, ensuring all DFS requests are adjudicated efficiently and effectively.
• Serve as a recognized subject matt er expert in DFS adjudication, providing guidance and training to lower-level professionals and technical team members.
• Communicate with parti es within and outside the organization, to ensure completion of required actions related to adjudicating DFSs.
• Review and delegate DFSs work to tech codes as required.
• Review and provide feedback as required to completed adjudications fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
• Evaluate and recommend availability work items, perform ship checks, identify/order material, authorize repair plans, and technical work instructions.
• Develop, implement, and refi ne DFS templates to ensure consistency and efficiency in DFS responses. Ensure all DFS tasks are completed within specified deadlines.
• Capture, identify, and implement lessons learned from DFS processes to drive continuous improvement.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, leveraging deep technical knowledge and expertise.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Active Secret Security Clearance.
• BA/BS in Engineering.
• Minimum of seven years of related experience, preferably as a Project Engineer or Project Support Engineer in a Shipyard or RMC environment.
• Ability to read, understand, and apply concepts from technical drawings and specifications at a high level.
• Experience providing technical oversight of deck plate repairs, evaluating deficiencies, authorizing and over seeing system testing, and evaluation/certification of test results.
• Ability to troubleshoot, plan, and support repair of complex systems on board Naval ships.
• Specialized experience in Project Engineering and Planning Manager, Project Engineer, Project Support Engineer, or Project Planner roles.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint).
• Ability to work in a typical shipyard environment with exposure to noise, dirt, and other environmental factors.
• Occasionally, required to wear personal protective equipment.
Desired:
• BA/BS degree in an engineering discipline.
• Broad knowledge of project management principles and practi ces.
• Experience organizing and managing a group of engineers and engineering technicians.
