Job Summary
Our client is seeking a highly experienced Subject Matter Expert to support advanced professional military education and operational-level training. The Senior Academic Instructor/SME will contribute to curriculum development, instructional delivery, course execution, and continuous improvement of multiple leadership and operational planning courses. The role supports government-led training environments and focuses on preparing senior leaders, planners, and staff personnel for complex, multi-domain operational responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Instruction & Course Execution
Deliver academic instruction in accordance with course director and manager guidance, using lectures, practical exercises, guided discussions, and small-group facilitation.
Provide instruction across a diverse set of senior leader and operational-level courses covering command and control, joint/combined operations, air component planning, mobility operations, staff leadership, and other advanced warfighting topics.
Tailor instruction for audiences ranging from company-grade and field-grade officers to senior enlisted leaders and general officers.
Ensure all course content, student materials, and academic aids are prepared, updated, and ready prior to instruction.
Manage classroom setup, operation of academic technologies, and distribution of student materials.
Maintain student records, course documentation, and course folders as required.
Curriculum & Courseware Development
Ensure all lesson plans, handouts, and instructional materials remain current and aligned with governing syllabi and applicable doctrine.
Review and incorporate student feedback, end-of-phase surveys, and end-of-course critiques into continuous improvement recommendations.
Coordinate proposed courseware updates, errata, and student-comment-driven changes with government stakeholders for approval prior to classroom use.
Support development and implementation of graduate evaluation plans to assess instructional effectiveness and training relevance.
Academic Support & Administration
Assist in maintaining continuity materials, academic references, audiovisual resources, and lesson courseware archives.
Support the execution of training events, exercises, and senior leader engagements requiring subject matter expertise in operational art and joint/multi-domain planning.
Operate instructional systems, simulation tools, and multimedia equipment used in training delivery.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution.
Minimum 10 years of Department of Defense experience with specific operational-level or air component–related background.
Eligibility for a Top Secret / SCI security clearance.
At least 20 years of military operational experience as a rated officer, intelligence professional, cyberspace officer, special operations officer, or space operations officer.
Minimum five years as a senior officer (GS-14/15, O-6, or equivalent general officer experience).
Career progression including:
Assignment at an operational-level headquarters as a field grade officer.
Leadership roles at a major command, joint command, or service headquarters (e.g., branch chief, division chief, directorate-level leadership)
Demonstrated training and instructor experience in at least one of the following:
Completion of a formal weapons instructor course (or sister-service equivalent) with follow-on instructor/evaluator duties.
Faculty experience in professional military education.
Graduate-level advanced study (e.g., operational art, strategic studies) with follow-on utilization tour.
Master Instructor certification or equivalent advanced instructional qualification.
Experience within a combat training, advisory, or operational training organization (e.g., mission command training, joint enabling/operational support, advisor roles, or similar).
