Our Approach to AI in Hiring
At Mile Two, applications are reviewed by real people—not filtered out by bots. Authenticity matters more than keyword tricks.
We know you're probably using AI tools to help draft or polish your resumes, and that’s fine! We're using AI to write this blurb about AI! But we expect you to make it your own. Resumes that feel copy-pasted I —repetitive, oddly phrased, “too perfect” matches to our job description— may hurt your chances. Adding personal touches and real examples of your work will make your application stronger.
We look forward to meeting the real you!
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The UAS/sUAS Test Engineer will be responsible for the planning, design, execution, and objective assessment of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and their integrated subsystems for defense applications. This role requires an engineer to act as an impartial technical assessor, providing data-driven evaluations to inform critical trade space decisions and capability insertions for warfighter systems. The ideal candidate possesses deep Ground Control Station/Human Machine Interface ( GCS/HMI) expertise and experience supporting rapid development of new and initial capabilities for immediate fielding.
This position is contingent upon Mile Two being awarded a specific government contract.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
I. Test Planning and Objective Assessment
Lead independent technical assessments and trade studies of competing sUAS technologies, configurations, and subsystem upgrades (e.g., payloads, battery chemistry), ensuring unbiased data is provided to program leadership.
Develop comprehensive Test and Evaluation Master Plans (TEMP), detailed Test Plans, and Test Procedures/Cards that stress system performance against operational requirements.
Review and decompose military-derived system requirements Capability Development Document/Capability Production Document (CDD/CPD) into actionable, measurable test objectives and critical pass/fail criteria.
Conduct thorough Test Hazard Analyses (THA) and implement risk mitigation strategies for complex test scenarios.
II. System Test Execution and Field Operations
Lead and execute flight and ground tests, serving as the Test Director or a key technical expert during operations.
Plan and execute tests to verify system performance, with a dedicated focus on:
Ground Control Station (GCS) Functionality: Testing software stability, performance, and communication link robustness.
Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Effectiveness: Evaluating the operator interface for usability, cognitive load, and mission effectiveness under stress.
Handling Qualities & GNC: Assessing flight dynamics, stability, and control loop performance in challenging conditions.
Support field operations, often involving deployment to military test and evaluation ranges, contractor owned test and evaluation spaces, and , coordinating test logistics and execution in austere conditions.
Ensure strict compliance with all range safety, airspace (military and civilian), and physical/cyber security protocols for classified testing.
III. Data Analysis and Reporting
Collect, process, and analyze large test data sets (telemetry, sensor data, error logs) using tools like MATLAB, Python, or proprietary GCS software.
Generate formal Quick-Look Reports and Detailed Test Reports that clearly document system limitations, failure root causes, and provide data-driven recommendations for system improvements and trade-offs.
Identify, document, and track system anomalies and failures in a designated issue tracking system (e.g., JIRA), working closely with development teams until resolution.
Determine and implement regression test requirements following software or hardware modifications.
Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering.
Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in flight test or system-level T&E, with a significant portion supporting sUAS/UAVs for defense/government clients.
Active U.S. DoD TS/SCI Security Clearance is required.
Active FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (or equivalent military operator designation).
Extensive practical experience with GCS hardware, software, and communication architectures.
Direct experience performing HMI/UX evaluation.
Demonstrated experience with DoD acquisition and testing processes (DT&E/OT&E). Preference for candidates with documented experience in supporting forward-deployed or "down-range" military operations involving UAS/sUAS.
Proficiency in data analysis using Python, MATLAB, or equivalent statistical/data visualization software.
Environment: A blend of laboratory, office, and frequent outdoor field testing in diverse and sometimes austere (hot/cold) environments, including test ranges.
Travel: Ability to travel up to 50% to various domestic and international test sites or customer locations.
